connoisseur series500 Posted February 13, 2005 Report Posted February 13, 2005 The inevitable has occurred and the rest of the league (and colleges) have taken the New England coordinators. Secondary coach, Eric Mangini was also heavily targeted but decided to stick around and be promoted as the NE defensive coordinator. This is huge for the team, because it will provide some degree of continuity, and Mangini is viewed as a real coaching talent. The pillaging hasn't ended yet, however, as NE Director of Player Personnel, Scott Pioli, who is often credited for picking up good cheap players in free agency is being interviewed by Seattle. Pioli is definitely General Manager material, and is likely to leave when his contract expires in 2006. If he leaves before that, NE is likely to be entitled to some compensation in the form of draft picks. I think Pioli will stick around for another season, but it will be interesting to see how the Pats play next year with all the coaching changes. I can't imagine the players being anywhere as motivated as they have been over the last few seasons. Two Super Bowls fills the belly, I bet. Maybe it's Pittsburgh's turn next year... Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 (edited) Dallas has apparently picked up Drew Bledsoe to be their QB for the upcoming season, after he was released by Buffalo yesterday. I assume there will be a press conference later today with terms of contract etc. Also seeing some rumors that they may pursue Lavernius Coles. If that were to happen I think the offense would be pretty set for next year (need some OL support from the second/later rounds of the draft still though). With Julius Jones, Jason Witten, a solid group of WRs, they could be pretty solid. Then the two first round draft picks AND additional free agency efforts can focus on the defense, where help is needed across the board. Initial needs there are DT/DE/CB/SS. I'd like to see them pick up Samari Rolle who was cut by the Titans. Aside - If Bledsoe's been given a long contract it may mean Drew Henson won't ever see the playing field, that Dallas doesn't like what it sees in him. If Bledsoe's contract is just a year or maybe two, then Henson may still play into the Cowboy's future. Personally I wish they would have given Henson the last half of last season, since it was wasted anyway. Sometimes ya need a baptism by fire (like Manning & Roethllisberger) to see what you're made of, and if Henson never gets that chance, they've wasted a couple of his prime years, at the least. Jim Dye Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 The Titans released 6 starters on Monday in an effort to get out of salary cap hell. Derek Mason, Kevin Carter, Samari Rolle, Robert Holcomb, Fred Miller and Joe Nedney will not be back. It sucks, but it had to be done. On the bright side, the Titans lured offensive coordinator Norm Chow away from USC when Heimerdinger went to the Jets. The next big decision is whether Steve McNair will retire or not. Either way, it's going to be a long season. Quote

In all fairness however, when your coach, i.e., Herm Edwards, plays for a 43 yard FG when there's a minute and a half to go and you have two timeouts, i.e., plenty of time to get closer for a chip shot, well then the loss is fully deserved IMO. Herm has to go to clock management/strategy school this off season or we're doomed as long as he's HC. Hey, that's what being a Jet fan is all about anyway, right? Derrick Mason may not be a bad pickup also. Justin McCareins, another ex-Titan receiver did ok for the Jets this past season. Edited February 23, 2005 by MartyJazz Quote

Shawn Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Lots of good news out of the Seahawks camp so far this offseason. From NFL.com - SEATTLE (Feb. 23, 2005) -- Tim Ruskell, assistant general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, was hired as the Seattle Seahawks' president of football operations, completing a major housecleaning of the team's front office. Ruskell also will fill the role of general manager. Man, I'm tellin' ya, when the Seahawks lost during the last drive of the game...for what seemed like the millionth time last season...because of the wide reciever curse that keeps them from catching the fucking ball...my heart sunk. How could a team with this much talent not be able to click as a unit? Then at the end of the game, the questions began to swirl. Would Holmgren leave? Would they lose the core of their offense to free agency? Etc, etc. Well, now the the front office changes have been made...and the deals are beginning. Walter Jones signed to a 7 year contract, Hasselback signed to a 6 year contract...and Shaun "give me 1 more friggin' yard" Alexander gets slapped with the Franchise tag. So, as a hopeful person...maybe the front office changes and the return of the core offensive unit will push them to the next level. I still think they need to pick up another veteran wide reciever...who can catch the ball...but it's a good start. With some more seasoning, I also believe that Darrell Jackson could evolve into a really great player. "Come on Seattle" Quote
Aggie87 Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Cowboys appear to have signed NT Jason Ferguson from the NY Jets, and also hearing rumors that they have picked up CB Anthony Henry from the Browns. Both appear to be very good signings at positions of need. 'Boys still need some O-line help, a good WR, strong safety, another d-lineman, and a strong safety. With 2 1st rnd picks, I wonder which they'll target in Free Agency and which will wait until the draft. Quote

Say Conn, If I'm not mistaken the Pats have a whole lot of draft picks, and given their excellent drafting record they may be sitting very pretty with young, cheap players. That's the salary cap dream. Quote

That's the salary cap dream. No extra draft picks this year. They've just got the normal compliment. Actually, I can answer my own question: you'll rarely see New England act early in the free agent marketplace. They let the high price guys go first then they seek out bargains. They like to pay players $1-2 million range. They've got a whole team full of these guys! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 3, 2005 Author Report Posted March 3, 2005 The exodus continues... Browns have just signed OG Joe Andruzzi from the Patriots. He signed a 4 year $9 million contract. Normally, the Pats are willing to pay this kind of money. I suppose they've got their eyes on some kind of replacement. Quote
JSngry Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Hey guys what about the Texans? Che. Sorry, I'm in the Dallas area. Cowboys fan here, for better or (lately) worse. My son follows rhe Texans a bit though, and seems to think that they're building a good team for the future. Still a few seasons away from being serious contenders, though, he thinks. I take his word on stuff like this - the kid's had about a 90% success rate in straight picks over the last few years. If I was smart, I'd raise his allowance and send him out into the world, at least during football season . Quote
PHILLYQ Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 The Jets lost two good players in Jordan & Ferguson- Now they have to find a defensive lineman, which I think EVERYONE is looking for, and no way do they get a backup running back as good as Jordan. The Raiders seem to have improved quite a bit with adding Moss(Not a bad deal for the Vikings- they get the 7th pick in the draft + another pick, and they get to clear off some cap room) and signing Jordan. Kerry Collins has some people to get the ball to who can score with it. There are still a lot of players available who could shine with the right team. Quote

I think it's typical at this time for most teams to be "short" players. In other words, greater numbers have departed from teams than have been added. This will change as the free agency period continues. Right now, most of our teams will appear to be in deficit as far as player changes are concerned. Quote
