Joe Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 According to Learned Father's liner notes to Hutcherson's HAPPENINGS, the Herbie Hancock standard was originally written for one of this company's television advertisements. [Largely] Common knowledge, OK, but I just wonder if any of the board's members actually recall seeing the commercial at the time and can offer any sort of description of it. Thanks in advance. Quote
JSngry Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 Wondered about this myself, Joe. I only remember Yardley's commercials from The Monkees NBC run, and by then, they were using Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven". At least as far as I can recall. Quote
Joe Posted February 14, 2005 Author Report Posted February 14, 2005 I think I'll write the home offices in London and demand that they make streaming video available from their website: http://www.yardleylondon.com/ Quote
JSngry Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 Dude, the models in those commercials were Carnabylicious, if you get my drift... Quote
Late Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 I think I'll write the home offices in London and demand that they make streaming video available from their website ... Well, at least they include the original, but little known, lyrics to "Maiden Voyage" on their site: Quote
JSngry Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 No man, those are the lyrics to "Chameleon". BASS: This is for you you you This is for you you you (repeat) SAX: Theone yousome times for-get Forget to be good to... Good to Etc. That Herbie, man, he was MADE for Tv! Quote
JSngry Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 Yeah, only more psychedelic. Tell you what, to a 12-13 year old boy in rural East Texas, it kinda spoiled the Merlene Thorirons at school the next day. But there was one chick - Kathy Williams - who was INTO that whole Mod look. Had the ironed hair, the patterned staockings, the little butterflies painted on her cheek, ALL that hip, groovy stuff. EVERY damn day, too. She could've easily been my babe once I got old enough to drive. But she was all into crank and shit by then. I tell you, living in the country's a BITCH! Quote

Hey, you're right ... ... but wouldn't you need to make that (a la Billy Joel) "ti-himes"? Quote
JSngry Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 Well, yeah. See, I'm NOT made for TV! Quote
Late Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 ... don't take it too hard. Condensed operas rarely get the Nielsen nod they deserve. Quote
Late Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 (edited) You mean Alban "Albany Al" Berg? Or the Austrian composer? Edited February 14, 2005 by Late Quote
Late Posted February 14, 2005 Report Posted February 14, 2005 Amelie's cynical while more worldly older sister. Quote
JSngry Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 You mean Alban "Albany Al" Berg? Or the Austrian composer? The latter. You know the guy who wrote "Lulu", the opera. See, you condense that opera, and you get a "Little Lulu", and... Aw hell, time for a new avitar anyway! Quote
Joe Posted February 16, 2005 Author Report Posted February 16, 2005 I still say you shoulda gone with a pic of Louise Brooks... Quote
