ss1, norton is a piece of crap. Do yourself a favor and get AVG (www.grisoft.com). They have a free version and even the virus database updates are free. It's also smaller than Norton and doesn't clog up your resources. Norton is a memory hog.

AVG Free Edition is here:

That said, you still need a program that scans for malware, spyware, and the like. Ad-Aware is a good one.

I've used Norton's anti-virus for almost 10 years now and I've had great luck (knock on wood). Recently, when my subscription came up for renewal, I upgraded to their new anit-virus program with built-in anti-spyware. So far, it's been great. I see no slowing of my machine because of this package. However, I have worked on many machines with Norton's "Internet Security" package and that will kill your performance.

As for AdAware, I uninstalled it. Unless you get the paid version, it doesn't stop you from getting infected, it merely helps you remove infections afterward. Spybot does allow for active blocking but it does miss some malware. I downloaded Microsoft's free ('til July) Anti-spyware program and it has been great. Not only is it active, it removes the infections better than any other package out there. SS1 should download and run this first.

Kevin
