Soul Stream Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Did Charlie Parker ever record "This Maquerade Is Over?" I was in a pharmacy today and it sounded like a later Parker (perhaps Verve) side since the sound was so good. However, I could have been hearing the original Lou Donaldson side on BN. If that's the case, man, Lou sure was blowing. Quote
Bill Fenohr Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Looking at the my Verve box, it does not appear that he recorded it for them. Quote
Brad Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Looking at AMG, Lou did it on Blues Walk but it's also been done by Cannonball on the Lush Side of Cannonball, Sonny Criss on the Hampton Hawes Sessions, and Sonny Stitt. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 24, 2005 Author Report Posted February 24, 2005 Thanks Bill. I'm getting the feeling I was listening to Lou. Quote
brownie Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Checked the Charlie Parker Discography by Bregman/Bukowski/Saks. No Bird Masquerade is listed in the tunes index. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I love the version on this one: I didn't realize the song was written in 1938! Did I read that right? Quote

AllenLowe Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 what year was the song written? Bird died in 1955 - Quote
MartyJazz Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 (edited) what year was the song written? Bird died in 1955 - This reminds me of a line I came out with a couple of years ago that some may think is humorous or perhaps not. Anyway it was at a Tribute to Bird concert, Roy Haynes leading a group that included Kenny Garrett & Nicholas Payton in the fall of 2002 at a concert hall in Fort Lauderdale. At one point, Payton had a solo feature on "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face", the audience applauding very appreciatively, I suspect because for the most part they finally recognized a tune. I said to my friend sitting alongside me, "Bird might have played this tune......" - I could see the wheels spinning as he tried to recall on what recording Bird did this tune - at which point, I ended my sentence, "if he hadn't died before My Fair Lady opened". In any event, my friend got a real chuckle out of that. Edited February 25, 2005 by MartyJazz Quote
jazzbo Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 (edited) From the Adderley website I read this: "The Masquerade Is Over was a 1938 hit by Herb Magidson and Allie Wrubel." (May be in the liners to the Cannon with strings lp, I haven't read those in some time, though I've spun the music recently; it's killer stuff). Edited February 25, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
