ghost of miles Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Has BMG Spain re-done this one yet? They put out A TOUCH OF THE BLUES several years ago... there's an old Bluebird release, AS TIME GOES BY, that combines the two and leaves several tracks off. Apparently only a Japanese import of WEST OF THE MOON has surfaced so far. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 I've only ever seen the Japanese cd of some seven years ago or so. . . . It's very nice! I recently bought the "Back Home Again in Indiana" Audiophile cd from George H. Buck (jazzology.com) and like it a lot. Quote

ghost of miles Posted March 8, 2005 Author Report Posted March 8, 2005 Thanks, Claude. In addition to being a Lee Wiley junkie, I'm also a Ralph Burns junkie--so WEST OF THE MOON seems like a musical marriage made in heaven, etc. I'll keep an eye out for it... Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 You will not be disappointed. Great backing by Ralph Burns on "West Of The Moon" album. I'm a Lee Wiley's completist. Did you have the Devil's Music CDs? Quote

Claude Schlouch Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 About the Devil's Music CDs, you can contact directly Mister Ted Ono at: tono@baldwinstreetmusic.com He is very kind, that is not regrettably the case of everybody. For information, I was in contact with a collector who has both April 10, 1940 & April 15, 1940 sessions (partially issued on Devil's Music DM-6004 CD released in 2003). I asked him the missing stuff (about 30 minutes) not issued on Devil's Music CD, but he refused, saying to me that he gave his word not to diffuse this music (preferring to keep his material as a child his teddy bear). Such attitude revolts me and does not make advance the Lee Wiley's discography. Did you share my point of view? Quote

I think people should be willing to share whatever they have, especially vintage material like this. Sometime people want to protect their sources, and I can understand that. Other people just want to be the only one who has something, and that I do not understand. jack Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 Just scored a mint copy of WEST OF THE MOON through the wonderful Mr. Tanno. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 1, 2006 Author Report Posted February 1, 2006 I'm pretty happy--been psyched to find a copy ever since starting this thread. But now I'm intrigued by these Devil's Music releases... Quote
P.D. Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Weren't the first Devil's Music CDs( the first two ) released without booklets and tray liners, which you were supposed to download from the net? Made them look like bootlegs, which is why I didn't pick them up when I saw them. Has this policy changed? Quote
brownie Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 P.D., I have vol. 3 of those Lee Wiley releases. There is a two-page book that advises to visit the www.baldwinstreetmusic.com site for information about the content! Quote

jazzbo Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 I think Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 have all the discographic/personnel information printed on the back card, and have covers. They're phenomenal reissues. Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Hi Brownie, Volume 4 is also available since 2003 (Devil's Music DM-6004). This CD contains both April 10, 1940 & April 15, 1940 sessions which are unfortunately incomplete. I was in contact with a collector who has both April 10, 1940 & April 15, 1940 sessions in their complete form. I asked him the missing stuff (about 30 minutes) not issued on Devil's Music CD, but he refused, saying to me that he gave his word not to diffuse this music (preferring to keep his material as a child his teddy bear). Poor little man! Ted Ono is working on the volume 5, but he has some problem to find a good original copy of "Down to steamboat Tennessee" and "Sugar" from the July 10 or 11, 1940 session. He wrote me the following: I am having a great deal of difficulties finding an acceptable copy of her 12" Commodore 78 "Sugar" and "Steamboat Down Tennessee." I've gone through nine copies but they are all "not so good." Quote
Guest Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Now I am familiar with this artist! The Baldwin Street/Devil's Music releases are outstanding. Am trying to get my hands on a copy of West of the Moon. It's available from eJazzlines by special order but will try cdJapan. Am sure it will pop up eventually. Not certain whether Definitive or Jazz Factory releases are considered bootlegs or not...but they are in all the stores locally. Dunno what is so top secret about 30 missing minutes from 1940 that a collector is sworn to secrecy and will not share. What's up with that? Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know..what's missing? Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 I don't know exactly what is missing, but probably breakdowns, false starts or complete takes... I send you some details I have: Note received from the man who has the complete session: Additional complete takes and breakdowns appear on Blu-Disc T 1013 which claims to be the complete session, however, a tape in the author’s possession contains additional material. From Devil's Music notes: We are fortunate to have about 110 minutes in total from the two Cole Porter sessions, of which we have used about 79 minutes. Those who own a copy of the Blu-Disc LP should keep the record since it contains some breakdown takes which are not on our Volume 4. We decided to eliminate them because we felt these tracks were too similar to the ones we did use. Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Dear Jeff, You will find on the GEMM site many copies of "A touch of the blues" from various sellers. Good luck! Claude Quote
Guest Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Thanks for the info, Claude. I checked the GEMM web site and only the vinyl version is available. As for the missing 30 minutes, I appreciate your filling in the blanks. Thought perhaps they would be an obscure song. Now that I know what's missing, the 79 minutes available are just fine with me. I checked the discography for the 7/10-11/40 session which appears on Disc 2 of the Complete Golden Years Studio Sessions (Definitive) and Down to Steamboat Tenn/Sugar are on Track 22/23. Of course no source is listed, so I'm not certain whether they are Commodore or not. Will have to give them a listen again to check sound quality. Still not sure whether Definitive falls into the category of 'boots', but sometimes I buy them because they are the only source available. Could you recommend a few more good Lee Wiley CDs? Have all of the Devil's Music stuff and her 3 Columbia albums on CD that were reissued by Collector's Choice. Also some Jazz Factory CDs. But would like to know what else is out there. CD Japan has West of the Moon on CD and a portion of their website is in English. Have dealt with them in the past and they were very prompt sending the Gerry Mulligan TOCJ I was looking for. Thanks for any recommendations. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 I recommend this one, on the excellent Uptown label: Quote
Guest Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 Thanks Claude and Jazzbo...Amazon had both of these CDs available for order. I love the Uptown label, having enjoyed the Mingus West Coast set with very complete, interesting liner notes and pics of the original 78s. It is the West of the Moon CD that's hard to find. CDJapan has that one still available, so I ordered it. Their website is easier to navigate now with album listings in English and track titles in Japanese. Quote
