Big Wheel Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 (edited) There are about a half hour or so of these out there, all of the title track, and they are really quite interesting from a historical perspective to me. I assume this was one of the very first jazz waltzes (or 6/8 pieces, depending on your perspective, I guess), and you can hear the soloists struggling to feel the meter for the first time. Wade Legge in particular has a bit of a hard time, but eventually does start to sound more comfortable. Very cool to hear them gradually locking into the groove. The last few takes feature the section with the poetry read over it. This was recorded some time before Max Roach's Jazz in 3/4 Time, right? Edited March 9, 2005 by Big Wheel Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 (edited) Mingus - Feb. 13, 1957 Roach 3/4 - March 18-21, 1957 But there are plenty of predecessors, Rollins Valse Hot - March 22, 1956; Monk Carolina Moon - May 30, 1952; Waller Jitterbug Waltz - March 16, 1942; Benny Carter Waltzing The Blues - June 20, 1936, etc. Mike Edited March 9, 2005 by Michael Fitzgerald Quote
kh1958 Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Out there where? I don't recall there being any extra takes of the Clown (or any of the other selections from the 1957 recording dates) in the Atlantic box set. Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 9, 2005 Author Report Posted March 9, 2005 These are not complete takes--mostly breakdowns and such. (I don't have the Atlantic box, but I assume it doesn't contain much of this nature.) Quote
jazzbo Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Okay. . . well now you're just showing off! Quote

The box doesn't contain anything like that. There are a few unrleased alternate takes from the Blues and Roots session, that's it. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 (edited) They must be cool. I listen to Mingus telling the crowd to not appaud on the Mingus Presents Mingus album about 1000 times. I love the way he handles that crowd. "continuin...., continu... CONTINUE this set with a song dedicated to the first, or second, or third.. " Edited March 9, 2005 by Jazz Kat Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 9, 2005 Author Report Posted March 9, 2005 Okay. . . well now you're just showing off! Maybe just a little...it's my revenge for being too young to pick up most of the '90s limited edition Blue Notes! Mingus sounds mostly in control on this. It's the engineers or producers (I think you can hear one of the Erteguns from the booth) who are getting exasperated as take 26....27...28 go by... Quote
bertrand Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Speaking of the alternates to Blues and Roots - what's wrong with the sound on these? The master takes sound fine, but there is some weird clicking sound on the alternates. I have the single-CD version, not the box. Bertrand. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Jazz Kat. . . you do know the crowd was "imaginary" on the Presents lp recorded at Nola's Penthouse Studio. . . right? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 lol. Not technically live, but never-the-less, it was live! wait a minute..... Quote
