A Lark Ascending Posted March 13, 2012 Report Posted March 13, 2012 Now seen 4 of the Inspector Montalbano series. I was slow to warm to these - the plots creak a bit and there's an opera buffa element in the police station that is a bit silly. But the scenery is amazing. And the soundtrack has had me digging out my Mediterranean jazz albums. Quote
Dave James Posted March 13, 2012 Report Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) Less than two weeks until Mad Men returns. I am stoked. Still toggling between this and The Sopranos as my all-time favorite. Just curious, has anyone else's significant other blown off MM in deference to how it portrays women? Edited March 13, 2012 by Dave James Quote
Shawn Posted March 13, 2012 Report Posted March 13, 2012 Just curious, has anyone else's significant other blown off MM in deference to how it portrays women? I've actually been bothered by that myself, I understand the reality of it, but it still irks me. I watched about half of Season One but I've never completed it. I plan to revisit one of these days, but I have to be in the right frame of mind for it first. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 It took me forever to get past a lot of the characters in that show and how they treat others. And I still don't really like many of them at all. But the production values are excellent and there's a fascination that keeps me coming back. My gal just shrugs at the way the women are treated. She works with huge judge egos long hours every day. She knows how to maneuver and to an extent manipulate. Quote
Shawn Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 The lack of likable characters is one of the primary things that's hindering me from enjoying it. I guess that's more of a fatal flaw to me, it kind of reminds me of films like 'The Grifters" where I just couldn't enjoy it because I HATED every character in the film. From a production standpoint it's an amazing show, hopefully one of these days I'll be in the appropriate headspace to appreciate it. Quote
BruceH Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I guess I'm in a very different 'headspace' cuz I like most of the characters on Mad Men. Perhaps "like" is a bad way to put it---"appreciate" would be more apposite. I certainly don't like them the way I would like a person in real life. Same way I like all the characters in Breaking Bad, especially Walt. Quote
JohnJ Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Still on season 3 here but I love 'Mad Men', to me it is just on a different level to most TV dramas. Also a great fan of the 'Don Draper' character, so effortlessly cool. Not sure what that says about me. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I absolutely hate the Draper character, just not the type of man I would ever want to be. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 17, 2012 Report Posted March 17, 2012 As you probably know I really like that show. Right now: Pretty mediocre show. But I must say they did some beautiful filmwork and the Blu-ray looks fantastic. Quote
kinuta Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Missing 1st episode Ashley Judd in an awful and unwatchable newbie. Truly dire. Quote
Shawn Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Not surprised, I had no interest in seeing that. Quote
Dave James Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Just abandoned The River once and for all. It started out marginally promising, but turned into Lost lite. Still enjoying Alcatraz. No great shakes, but good enough to keep me watching. Looking forward to the return of The Killing. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Interesting, as I see no similarity between LOST and The River. The River I think is wildly entertaining in the way that American Horror Story is: completely derivative and throwing in every genre cliche but the kitchen sink, and it's dramatic aspects became very funny. Alcatraz. . . I keep checking in on it and wanting to like it but I just keep getting appalled by the senseless killing after senseless killing, the totally ridiculous concept of Sarah Jones as a detective and Jorge Garcia as a cracker jack historian, and there's nothing appealing about the series at all for me. Looking forward to the return of the Killing; I just got the Blu-ray set of the first season in the mail and am looking forward to spinning it. Quote
Shawn Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Grimm was renewed for a second season, that's good news to me, one of the few new shows I've enjoyed watching each week. It's so low-key I was concerned about it's chances, but it seems to have found an audience. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Fringe is coming back Friday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz1yh6OFZzQ&feature=relmfu Quote
jazzbo Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 Enjoying watching this on disc, has more impact than one episode a week or so on broadcast. Haven't seen the original from Denmark, but thought AMC did a good job adapting this. Season 2 starts April 1. Quote

BruceH Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 I absolutely hate the Draper character, just not the type of man I would ever want to be. I don't think of TV characters as life or role models. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 No, but having worked with some persons like Draper, and knowing some that aspire to be like him, his character really rubs me the wrong way. He's a reminder to me of the sort of "manliness" and "success" I want to be far away from. I watch it in spite of him and have learned to like a few characters such as Roger and Joan more over the years. Quote
kinuta Posted March 24, 2012 Report Posted March 24, 2012 Fringe- yawn, loony murderers again, wtf? Titanic (ITV) Upstairs Downstairs meets Dowton Abbey. Really, what's the point, who, I wonder could have any interest in yet another version of The Titanic sinking? Shallow and glossy trash. With the ship hitting the iceberg after just 30 minutes, one wonders how they will pad out the next 3 episodes. Watch the great ' A Night To Remember' instead. Quote
BruceH Posted March 26, 2012 Report Posted March 26, 2012 Well, caught the season 5 premiere of Mad Men. Thought it was quite good. Quote
kinuta Posted March 26, 2012 Report Posted March 26, 2012 (edited) I'll be watching that later. Just watched this week's The Good Wife, excellent even by it's consistently high standard. I've given up on the lame and boring BBC White Heat. Couldn't care less about any of the dreary characters. I was there and it was much more fun than this ! Edited March 26, 2012 by kinuta Quote
