New and sealed...At a local mom 'n pop store... $15 each + tax + shipping if interested...

I have both already, though my SHB has a punch-hole, but is really just fine...I'm not that obsessive...

So these are up for grabs! Who wants me to grab 'em for you ?

Did I mention that these sound marvelous? B-) :)

I have the 'Basra' and 'Patterns' and I agree, they sound great.

Ooooooh, I'm so jealous... seriously... where's the "green with envy" smilie?

:g This one, I guess? B-)

I'd love to hear those...

For real, if anyone knows where to locate any of these I'd be very interested. :excited:

So far I've acquired:

Lou Donaldson-Pretty Things

Jackie Mac-Destination Out!

Big John Patton-Let 'Em Roll

Duke Pearson-Sweet Honey Bee

All are fantastic! :tup:tup

Maybe one more...I can't recall right now...

I've just checked my Wallys ( :D ) and it looks as though I have more than I thought. In addition to the 'Basra' and 'Patterns' (the latter is in mint and was from Hiroshi) I have:

Lee Morgan 'The Procrastinator'

Art Blakey 'Like Someone In Love'

Wayne Shorter 'The All Seeing Eye' (this one signed on the back for me by Wayne)

Hank Mobley 'A Slice of the Top'

Lou Donaldson 'Sunny Side Up'

Hank Mobley 'The Turnaround'

Bobby Hutcherson 'Components'

All are great !

How does a "Wally" of "Sweet Honey Bee" improve what is already a tape of an LP? You would think even vinyl fans would dig the CD of this session... it's a needle-drop! :)

BTW, isn't $15 a little on the high side? Maybe I'm full of it, but I swear these went for around $10 when they came out and even at that price, didn't sell all that well. In fact, I'd be interested at $10, but $15? I'll play the CDs.

I think $15 is definitely a fair price. Most of mine were around the £10 mark so that would have been about $15 at the going exchange rate. For fans of the vinyl as distinct from CDs, these LPs are a pretty good buy. Many are on heavy vinyl too.

Hmmm, are we sure about all this...? <_< Heck, the copy I have sounds fabulous!

Hmmm, I dunno, Kev...The ones I've seen new and sealed were the ones that started this thread and a couple others. They were priced $14.99 and some others $17.99. I'd say there right up there quality-wise with the Classic Records versions that cost $30 a pop!

And they're gone! (I mean in general, not the ones that I spotted.) Shit, I just paid $25 each for the Leeway & Procrastinator Conn LPs just now that I found on the way home...they were opened, but mint...I tried talking to the guy, complaining about the price, and he said, "Cuz there so gone!"

However, he did cut the price in half of the $5 Pete Townsend/Ronnie Lane Rough Mix lp I was getting... B-) :tup:w

Definitely. The master tape of "Sweet Honey Bee" as well as Silver's "The Jody Grind" are LP dubs. Cuscuna confirmed that a while ago. In fact, there was a lot of talk about the JRVG CD of "Sweet Honey Bee" as being "click-free". When RVG re-did that title, he didn't use the US master, but went back to the Japanese master to see if it was a tape dub (after getting hounded by me for a month! :D). From what Michael said, it seems that the Japanese master is simply a cleaned-up needle-drop.

That makes sense, Kevin. The 'Sweet Honey Bee' master was either wrecked or lost - it was mentioned in a thread on the BNBB some years ago. In fact several of the posters at the time found pristine originals of this session that they pondered even opening and playing (was it 'Swinging Swede'?). In general though, the sound of the Wally's is excellent and, as has been mentioned by Parkertown, up there with the Classic Reissues. I gave 'Patterns' a spin last night and it was pretty damn good, to say the least.

I want one of those Big John 'Let Em Roll's too :excited:

I thought these "Wally" titles sounded familiar. I looked in my pile and found that I have two, Andrew Hill's "Judgement!" and Dizzy Reece's "Blue In Trinity". I then realized why I thought these were going for around $10... these were issued in the Connoisseur & Rare Groove series... from digital masters. There was a big stink about this when it was discovered and afterward, most stores couldn't give them away. The vinyl afficiandos put their noses in the air at them.

I can't tell you how many times I had that Hank Mobley "A Slice of the Top" in my hand, only to put it back down because I had heard it sounded lousy. I almost bought it just to see.

It's good to see that some people played them before passing judgement on their sound. As for myself, I don't think I've even played either one. I bought them to get signed. Andrew Hill's autograph on "Judgement!" is pretty wild. Silver Sharpie across the black shadows. :) I'll have to give them a spin. Hell, I think the Reece disc is in a picture frame!

That's the usual ! :D

I'm suprised at the comments about the sound on 'Slice of the Top'. It's way better than the LT-series 'Rainbow' original. I'll have to give it a spin a bit later.

I'm still impressed with the sound of the 'Basra'. Holds up quite well against the NY USA original, IMO, although the sound is not as full.

That wouldn't be too hard! :) That's the main reason I almost bought that Connoisseur LP, just to see if it sounded better than the old LT LP, which I thought sounded odd. If I remember right, the intruments were placed rather strangely across the two channels with a lot of them lumped into one.

EDIT: I just dug out my LP of Dizzy Reece's "Blue In Trinity" (it was in a picture frame) and found out it's a "Larry", as in Larry Walsh.

Kevin,

Some of 'em say Larry Walsh on the jacket, but when you look in the dead wax, it says "Wally." I know I've got one like that...

I'm jealous of those 2, Kevin...especially "Blues In Trinity"...definitely a favorite...

Hey, here's an idea: You keep the jacket in the frame...sell me the record! ;) B-)

Oh, poop! I just won an LT-series "Slice From The Top." Took bad I can't find more of the "Wally's." <_<
