sergeson Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Hello! I'm looking for a CD that has live jazz recordings from the street. Preferably one lone saxophone player. I've searched all over and have had no luck. Can anyone give me some pointers on where to look? Thanks a bunch! sergeson Quote
Free For All Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I am going to use this opportunity to resist my inclination to post a smart-ass response and potentially drive away a newbie. Unfortunately, I have little else to contribute in this case. Welcome to the board. Quote
Jim R Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 The closest thing I can think of is that (controversial) Sonny Rollins solo concert at the Museum Of Modern Art in '65. I know he wandered away from the mic, but whether he ever ventured out on the street, I'm not sure... Quote
Big Wheel Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 There are the outdoor recordings on disc one of the Atlantic New Orleans Mosaic box, but these feature large groups, not a solo sax player. Quote
rostasi Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I have an excerpt from a saxophonist playing in a NY subway, but only an excerpt. Maybe, if you could provide a bit more detail of what you're doing? --- Now playing: Pan Sonic - Etäisyys/Distance Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I think the only way to get what he's looking for is to get a digital recorder and walk around NYC til you find a street musician playing saxophone. Quote
Free For All Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Perhaps Gato Barbieri has the appropriate vibe? Quote
mgraham333 Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Or try the solo track from Rollins' The Sound of Sonny (It Could Happen To You track 8 I believe) and mix it with a recording of street sounds - which shouldn't be too hard to capture. Quote
medjuck Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 There was a British sax player named something like Lon Coxhill who used to busk on the streets of London. I know he made some records but he might have gone inside to record them. Quote
couw Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 wasn't there a track in one of the BFTs that was recorded in a subway? Quote
couw Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 of course some of the Tony Schwartz (click) recordings are an all outside and street affair. Quote
John B Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 This fits most of your criteria: live, just one sax (and a drummer) recorded in Grand Central Station with full "street noise" audible in the background. Sadly, as the picture states, this one is out of print. Quote
RDK Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 This fits most of your criteria: live, just one sax (and a drummer) recorded in Grand Central Station with full "street noise" audible in the background. Sadly, as the picture states, this one is out of print. Sounds cool. I wonder why more music isn't recorded like that? The acoustics down there in the subway tunnels give it a unique sound - a ton of echo and reverb. Quote
