Bright Moments Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 how about this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...6961328027&rd=1 disclaimer: i have nothing to do with this auction and i do not know the seller! Quote
alankin Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 He also lists a bunch of LPs at at a much, err, lower starting price. Quote
JSngry Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Surely this price is a pipe dream? ← High or low? Truthfully, I'd think it could go for quite a bit more than that. Could... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 I'd love to read all those. Those pieces that I have read from this magazine are wonderful fun! But I've bought myself way too many expensive presents lately! Quote

Jazzmoose Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Surely this price is a pipe dream? ← High or low? Truthfully, I'd think it could go for quite a bit more than that. Could... ← Amazing. I admit, the vintage jazz magazine market is not an area of expertise for me; I'm impressed. Quote
JSngry Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Well, there's no way in hell I could afford this colection, even at the minimum bid, but I'd like to encourage any and all who are interested in vintage music to look around at your local used book/magazine/etc emporium(s) and don't hesitate to buy older jazz magazines. Or oeruse your local library/libraries for same. Nothing quite like it, and if it ain't quite the "real deal" in terms of being there musically (it's commercial journalism, remember, so the filters are already firmly in place), it goes a long way towards creating a sense of being there in the marketplace. Nothing like reading the infamous no-star Down Beat review of the Bird Savoy side in a magazine stuffed full of "canaries" and such. That's an experience no history book or "reader" can provide. Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 It's more than $20 an issue. That's a ridiculous price. If there's a fool willing to pay it, he deserves to be parted from his money. Of course, I completely agree that the old magazines are wonderful. That's not in question. Mike Quote
JSngry Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 Understood, Mike, but I gotta ask - how common are copies of The Record Changer these days, especially ones in really good condition (as these seem to be? Or more to the point - how common is a near-complete(?) set? It's the completeness (or damn close to it) of the set that would be attractive to me, even at the Minimum Bid price. Don't know that I've ever seen even an individual issue of the magazine, much less an entire set... Then again, maybe these are chump questions (or would be if I was entertaining a purchase). If so, say so. I just castigated Franis Davis elsewhere for maying too much (ie - ANYTHING) for a bootleg, so maybe there's a better/cheaper/easier way to get the same thing. If I would be a chump for even considering this purchase (and in my dreams, I am...), say so! (I'm expecting Allen to come to my defense if you do, though... ) Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 No idea as to how many get sold nowadays, but I know that an archive like Rutgers IJS has them all when I need them. The New Hampshire Library of Traditional Jazz is another place, Univ. of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, Bowling Green, etc. WorldCat tells me there are libraries in 16 US states that include The Record Changer in their collections (can't tell completeness). For you, Jim, I'll tell you to get thee to the University of Texas at Austin, where the Ross Russell archives contains a "complete or nearly complete" run. A little websearching showed me that a set of 102 issues was being offered at $500 total minimum bid and minimum bid was $5/issue - now that's a reasonable price. I mean, this is a little magazine - sometimes it was ONLY auction information. It is an important source - but if 102 can start at $5/each (and it's true, I don't know where that auction ended), starting 118 at $20/each is ridiculous. FWIW, you can get the complete cartoons that Gene Deitch did for The Record Changer in a book (only $40). http://www.fantagraphics.com/artist/genedeitch/thecat.html BTW, I find it very offensive to call someone a "chump" just because he overpaid. We've all done it - you live and learn. Mike Quote
JSngry Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 All right then, that's news I can use. Thanks! As far as the chump/overpaying thing, I've done it as well, more than I care to mention, actually. But I've never been offended by being told that I was inded a chump. I consider it schooling, and schooling ain't always pretty. Hell, if I took away everything I learned "pleasantly", I don't know how much of what I know that I still consider worth knowing would be left! Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 (edited) nice! edit: Just put these here as they are very cool. I will need to check in to Mike's recs. Edited May 22, 2005 by Man with the Golden Arm Quote

That's a great book, Cat on a Hot Thin Groove(Fantagraphics Books). It also reproduces all the covers he did for the magazine. ← Indeed, a fine book. I read some rather tiny reprints of Gene Deitch's "The Cat" cartoons in Crumb's Weirdo magazine some years back and became an instant fan. When the Fantagraphics book came out I felt the need to buy a copy at a real, physical, off-line, brick-and-morter store (I get these odd notions sometimes.) Wouldn't you know, right then almost nobody seemed to be stocking the damn thing and it took me a week or two to find one. Worth it though. Quote
mgraham333 Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 Got my copy of Cat on a Hot Thin Groove from Amazon.com today. The book was in bad shape. The spine was broken and the pages (as a whole) were separated from the binding. The book is rather large and oddly sized. I just wonder if as it was being packed it was held by it's front or back cover with the rest of the book left to dangle... Amazon.com will make it right. I've only had to use their return process a few times, but each time they've come through. I did flip through the pages and looked at some of the covers and cartoons. I opted for the replacement rather than the refund. So I guess that says something. Quote
sheldonm Posted June 1, 2005 Report Posted June 1, 2005 Hell, I almost have a complete set and mine averaged 6-7 dollars per issue. I have all the ones that Gene Deitch drew as he is a friend and many others. The entire set would be cool and the condition of them look great but $2500.00 is too steep in my opinion. Mark Quote

I just wonder if as it was being packed it was held by it's front or back cover with the rest of the book left to dangle... It is rather unwieldy. The thing won't fit on any of my normal bookshelves, so I keep it lying flat on top of a row of LPs. BruceH Posted May 27 2005, 12:14 PM I read some rather tiny reprints of Gene Deitch's "The Cat" cartoons in Crumb's Weirdo magazine some years back and became an instant fan. I had the same experience. I was very happy when Fantagraphics published the whole shebang. Someone should publish a compilation of the Record Changer articles, too. (Orrin Keepnews's articles were reprinted in his book; does anyone know if any of the others were reprinted elsewhere?) Quote
Brad Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 I guess the seller proved if you don't ask, you don't get it. Of course, nobody leapt but you never know sometimes. Quote
