Dmitry Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I know of a couple of Miles Davis gigs from 1948, one or two Stuff Smith dates. How about Tatum? Quote
brownie Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 Don't think there are any recordings of Tatum playing at the Onyx club. There is a celebrated album of Tatum private recordings that was issued on the Onyx label. The 'God Is In The House' album! Dean Benedetti brought his tape machine at the Onyx club in the summer of 1948 when the Charlie Parker quintet (with Miles Davis) played there in the Summer of 1948. The surviving music is in the Mosaic Parker Benedetti box. Some of the same music (in more truncated form) was issued previously on the JazzWorkshop label as 'Bird on 52nd St.' Quote
Dmitry Posted July 19, 2005 Author Report Posted July 19, 2005 Thanks, I didn't know that Benedetti recorded Bird at the Onyx. Is Onyx the club somehow related to Onyx the record label? Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I think the label was named in honor of the club. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I think the label was named in honor of the club. ← And it's black. Quote
