Producer's note:

While we found origiinal tape sources in almost every case, the fidelity on some of the early sessions is not up to Verve's later standards. Session A is dubbed from a disc or LP and session B has some distortion in the original tapes. Although session S was recorded in stereo, the separation was off-kilter and the balance was constantly shifting. We have used the superior-sounding mono masters here.

Like all Mosaic sets, we try to present the tunes and sessions in chronological order as they happened. There are several instances where we've taken liberties for musical reasons. Ms. O'Day's 6 tracks on Gene Krupa's "Drummer Man" album are followed by her one appearance on the soundtrack to the Gene Krupa. The series of sessions with arranger Russ Garcia that produced "Waiter, Make Mine Blues" are interrupted chronologically by the three Bill Holman sessions that produced "The Incomparable". We moved the first Garcia session to avoid disrupting the musical continuity. "Detour Ahead" from session HH appears on Disc Eight instead of Disc Severn because of time limitations.

A 1959 Down Beat ad announced a forthcoming Anita O'Day album entitled "A New Day, A New Life, A New Love", titled after a Tommy Wolf-Fran Landesman song. The Verve recording logs and tape vaults show no such song or session. This seems to have been a prematurely announced project that never materialized.

Some discographies list unissued 1961 sessions by Ms. O'Day and Gary McFarland. No tape exists of these sessions. Since McFarland recorded the orchestra tracks in New York City and Ms. O'Day overdubbed her vocals in Los Angeles, these would have merely been orchestral backing tracks anyway.
