You know, I have some Bose speakers (unused for a long time) and I DON'T believe that Bose is a four letter word like many audio lovers seem to. . . .

BUT. . . .

I wouldn't buy one of their stereo systems. . . not that they're bad, but they are way overpriced. The entire product line is overpriced. You don't get what you pay for with their stuff.

I have been interested in the new digital amps, and especially digital receivers with cd and or dvd and SACD players incorporated, and this last week spent some time listening to a Sony digital receiver with an SACD/DVD/CD player incorporated, running into the speakers of a 27" Trinitron TV. (In the swanky Waikiki hotel room that I hated to leave!)That system sounded a lot better than I expected it to, and I bet with even modest separate speakers it would sound even better. . . . I was impressed. Didn't have a glare to the treble and an edginess I find in solid state machines at this price point and beyond, and there was a lot of "resonance" to the sound. I'd look in to one of those, last Xmas season they were available for between 300 and 500 dollars, and speakers could be had that mate with them easily. . . .I think with this system that SACDs are not even really converted to analog before amplification, a real plus; I didn't have any SACDs with me to play though. If I were ever allowed the right to have a system in the bedroom (it's outlawed so far by my wife; she wants a music/tv free zone!) I'd consider one of these receivers. . . .

I would really like to recommend more expensive machinary that is tube amplified, but they don't quite fall into your budget. . . . .

I believe the Bose wave system goes for $500, and there's an acoustic wave at around $1,000.  Is there anything better for $1,000 or less?

Yes.

okay...what do you recommend? Go easy on me, I don't know much about audio technology.
