Free For All Posted September 15, 2005 Report Posted September 15, 2005 FWIW, Dennis, I wouldn't read anything "sinister" into Chuck's comments. I, for one, am a fan of Shorty Rogers. Some (not all, however) of his arranging/composing really knocks me out. Check out "Invisible Orchard"- definitely some of his more adventuresome writing IMHO. Have you seen his Jazz Scene USA DVD? Enjoy the Proper box! Quote
Kyo Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 (edited) Anyone know what labels this material originally appeared on? Also, how much of this stuff is available elsewhere? Since I just went over all the tracks out of my own interest I'll give you a quick rundown: Disc 1 tracks 1-3: no idea Disc 1 tracks 4-9: Available on the Capitol CD "Birth of the Cool Vol. 2" along with eight tracks by Gerry Mulligan's Tentet and two by the Metronome All-Stars featuring Miles Davis. Also part of the Shorty Rogers Mosaic set. Disc 1 tracks 10-18: Available on the Xanadu CD "Shorty Rogers/Art Pepper - Popo". Disc 2 track 1: Available on the Contemporary Records CD "Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Vol. 3", note that three other tracks from that session and several more from that album are missing here! Disc 2 tracks 2-3: no idea Disc 2 tracks 4-11: Available on the RCA CDs "Shorty Rogers and His Giants" and "Short Stops" Disc 2 tracks 12-19: Available on the RCA CDs "Shorty Rogers Express", "Cool and Crazy" and "Short Stops" Disc 2 track 20: no idea (some live bootleg?) Disc 3 tracks 1-2: no idea (some live bootleg?) Disc 3 tracks 3-6: Available on the RCA CD "Short Stops" and possibly on the soundtrack CD for that movie (forgot its name) Disc 3 tracks 7-18: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers Courts the Count" Disc 4 tracks 1-8: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers/Andre Previn - Collaboration" Disc 4 tracks 9-12: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers and His Giants" Disc 4 tracks 13-15: Available on the RCA CD "Al Cohn/Shorty Rogers - East Coast/West Coast Scene" along with three more tracks by Al Cohn's group. Disc 4 tracks 16-19: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers/Andre Previn - Collaboration" Disc 4 track 20: Leftover from the above session, no idea where it might be available from RCA. I'm tempted. I have the Capitol CD, "Popo" and the "Giants" disc but nothing featuring the bigger ensembles. I think this would be a stronger set if they'd concentrated on the RCA material. Most of that is out of print and pretty hard to get for a decent price these days. Edited February 20, 2008 by Kyo Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Disc 1, tracks 1 to 3: According to Bruyninckx, reissued on a Fresh Sound compilation entitled "Way To The West". Disc 2, tracks 2 & 3: Available e.g. on RCA LP NK 98865 "Little Richard / Boots Brown & His Blockbusters - Rockin' n' Ravin' " Disc 3, tracks 1 & 2: (Re)Issued previously on LP JAM SESSION JS-100 So there you go ... OOP but secondhand bins are always worth a look And it makes that Propoer box look even more like a hodgepodge good as a starter but invariably something that will annoy those who dig deeper into this artists's recordings because they end up duplicating EVERYTHING! I like the Mosaic EMI/Atlantic box and wish they'd follow up with an RCA box, but somebody somewhere on here once reported that this had been one of Mosaic's poorer selling sets, so I'm wondering if we'd ever see one.
