Guest akanalog Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 for anyone who knows paul bley-i recently picked up a dubiously provenanced copy of a paul bley album called "blood" on CD. it looks like the CD is on fontana. the cover has a drawing of bley with hands shaking on his neck and some faces and a skull in his hair. from what i have seen, this is also the cover to "touching". what's the deal here? i thought "touching" was a black lion album with a photo of bley playing on it-not an illustration. the CD i got has 10 songs-it statrtd with "blood" and ends with "pig foot". what's the deal with the CD i got and is it considered a good bley album? Are they cdrs? ALSO, as many questions as you ask, why not invest in a discography and stop mooching off those of us paying the bucks? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 wha? i said it was on fontana. i paid 15 bucks for it, chuck. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 i bought it at a store and it seems sketchy is what i am saying. i liked the cover and it had some good tunes. since i bought it someone recommended "touching" and then i saw the cover to "touching" on a website and it looked like the cover to the album "blood" i bought except for the replacement of the word "blood" with "touching". perhaps that was the wrong cover for "touching". but i bought this CD in a reputable store here in new york. Chuck Nessa Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 Or did you mean you thought the cd had been stolen? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 (edited) no i meant that i cannot tell how official it is. it is possible that though i paid normal CD money for it that it is a homemade job or something. doesn't look totally professional. i mean i guess it is legit. but who knows. i mean i have seen other paul bley albums in stores that looked a bit sketchy (mostly IAI or whatever it is called ones) Edited August 10, 2005 by akanalog Quote

Guest akanalog Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 it his label. i meant the production values suck. the cover and stuff look like it is out of a photocopier. Quote

Guest akanalog Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 chuck, they are just poor reproductions of the LP graphics. look shoddily put together and printed. Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 I still don't understand the confusion described in the initial question, but here is the cover of Blood, Fontana 883 991 JCY, artwork by Marte Röling. I own Touching as part of the Arista/Freedom 2fer and as a Black Lion CD, so I can't help with the Fontana LP issue of that. Mike Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 All right, so I lied - I can help. Here is the cover (in b&w) of Touching, Fontana 688 608: Mike Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 yeah that is what confused me, michael. Quote
brownie Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 Got both 'Blood' and 'Touching' when they came out in the late sixties when there was not much interest in Bley's music. 'Blood' came out first on 'International Polydor'. It was subtitled 'Paul Bley in Haarlem'. Mark Levinson - a name familiar to people interested in HiFi now - was on bass then. Heard the Bley trio with Levinson perform at the Comblain festival Belgium in 1966, the year these two albums were recorded. A superb trio! International Polydor vinyls were manufactured in Germany by Deutsche Grammophon. Quote
JSngry Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 'Blood' came out first on 'International Polydor'. It was subtitled 'Paul Bley in Haarlem'. ← I've got a Japanese CD issue of that with this cover: But the OBI shows the Fontana cover posted above. Go figure. IIRC, this albm was also 1/2 of the Arista/Freedom 2-fer LP Copenhagen and Haarlem. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 so "blood" is live? i have the colorful illustrated cover michael f shows above. just to finish this up, here is my tracklisting- 1.blood 2.albert's love theme 3.el cordobes 4.only sweetly 5.seven 6.mister joy 7.ramblin' 8.kid dynamite 9.nothing ever was, anyway 10.pig foot this seems to be a japanese issue as it has japanese writing on the bottom back cover. it is labelled PHCE-1006 i agree-this is a nice trio. i am impressed. sometimes i don't enjoy bley's rhythm sections (with the lawrence cook and dick youngstein's of the world) Quote
JSngry Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 I think there's two different albums called Blood - the Fontana one, which you have, and the International Polydor one, which I have. My Blood only has two songs - Blood & Mr. Joy. To confuse matters further, AMG gives the track listing for the Fontana on a page that shows the International Polydor cover, and then gives a review & track listing of the International Polydor issue under the album name Paul Bley in Harlem and shows no cover!
