bertrand Posted August 14, 2005 Report Posted August 14, 2005 Does anyone know the original LP track order for Mingus Dynasty? I seem to remember it as being different than that of the current expanded CD. Specifically, I seem to recall that 'Far Wells, Mill Valley' was track 3 and 'Song With Orange' was track 6. They are switched on the CD. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
marcello Posted August 14, 2005 Report Posted August 14, 2005 (edited) Here they are: Side 1 Slop Diane Song with Orange Gunslinging Bird Side 2 Things Ain't What They Used to Be Far Wells, Mill Valley New Now, Know How Mood Indigo Put Me in That Dungeon I have both the original stereo LP (CS 8236 ) and the new CD ( a gift) and I like the LP sequence better than the cd with the extra takes. They should have left them on the shelf. Edited August 15, 2005 by marcello Quote

bertrand Posted August 15, 2005 Author Report Posted August 15, 2005 Thank you gentlemen. The LP I was familiar with was the reissue in the French I Love Jazz series, and I guess they inverted the tracks. It was just jarring to not hear 'Far Wells' right after 'Diane'. This sequence is just burned in my brain. I love those two tracks. I agree about the alterantes/expanded tracks. Mingus had edited these down just right - he knew what he was doing. I kept my old 'Ah Um' just to have the edited stuff 'as issued'. I do not have Dynasty in this format, however. Bertrand. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Me, I love the unedited tracks. Different strokes for different folks I guess! Quote
kh1958 Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 I don't agree. For the most part, I prefer the unedited tracks on Mingus Ah Um and Mingus Dynasty myself. I suspect that Mingus was pressured to edit solos to get as many of his compositions as possible on his Columbia releases. The additions to Booker Ervin's solos are especially welcome. Either way, they are both great albums. Thank you gentlemen. The LP I was familiar with was the reissue in the French I Love Jazz series, and I guess they inverted the tracks.
