Hello KC folks! I posted something a few weeks back on another thread regarding my trip out here to KC. I got into town tonight and I'll be here til next week. I don't know exactly what my schedule is going to be like just yet, but I should have an idea tomorrow evening. I'm pretty sure I've got the weekend to myself.

I'm hoping some of y'all out here can find some time to show an east coaster around a little bit. Spoontaneous mentioned possibly getting together. PM if you guys have some time in the next two weeks.

Looking forward to it!

Cary,

I am in Sacramento all week ... you'd think the KC contingent could actually be in town while you are!

BTW, just got back from Emerald Isle, just up the road from you!

I think I remember reading something from Rooster last week about a trip out of town, so I don't think he'll be around until next week...

Anyway, I am boing to be tied up it seems like until Saturday night. I'll have al day Sunday as well and would like to visit the Charlie Parker museum. Anything else you'd recommend? Hopefully we can get a few together on Saturday night!

Alright, well I'm back in KC. Overland Park actually. I'll be here until Friday morning. Again, I don't really know what my schedule is going to look like at night. I'd really like to get together with some of you, especially if there is any music happening in town.

I'll be checking in here tomorrow with a better idea of what the nights are going to look like. I'm hoping we can find some time to get together this time around!

FWIW, I'm playing with a local big band tomorrow (Monday) night at the Blue Room which is in the 18th/Vine district. I hope you can come by! The band plays from 7-11. Be sure to come up and introduce yourself!

EDIT: If that doesn't work out, maybe we can hook up with Spontooneous and Rooster and do lunch sometime this week! Maybe we can even convince Rooster to finish up that blindfold test..........:ph34r:;):g

I'll try to get down to the Blue Room tomorrow (Monday) night, but it'll be at least 9pm before I can get down there (got a meeting from 7:30 to 8:30, and it'll probably go until 9pm).

Or we could maybe hook-up Tuesday night after 8pm (I gots a meeting from 7pm-8pm). Not sure what decent jazz (if any) is happening on a Tuesday night in this town, but perhaps Spontoonious can chime in with a suggestion.

PS: I look like one of the guys in this pic -- the one that doesn't look like Andrew Hill. :P

Warm, crazy night in the KC MO Power and Light district with Hillary Clinton on book tour and a bunch of soccer (football)-mad folks. Free weeklies list a least a couple of new vinyl retail venues and some interesting nearby clubs. Alas, workin'. No time. But good to see the Jazz Museum up and running. My first visit here, it was no more than a vision.

Local visitors guide lists notable city achievements: "invented jazz jam session".

Thanks for the very kind offer of hospitaility. I'm in town until Sunday, but I'm doing my usual 18-hour workdays, so my arrival yesterday is likely to be my only "at leisure" time.

That World Cup crowd was pretty amazing. I'm not a sports guy, but it seemed like the whole town/everyone in the family was there...with wacky glasses and face paint. Not something I see often on the blase' coasts.

If you're staying near the P&L, make sure you stop in for a bite at Bristol Seafood. Having lived on the southwest Florida coast most of my life, I can report that it isn't the best seafood in the world, but it's pretty good for the Midwest. And they have many other fine options on the menu.

Other than that, there aren't really any great food offerings downtown.

The Philips Chop House was outstanding, but closed many years ago.

Really? What other places downtown do you like? We usually hit Westport or the Plaza when it comes time to eat.

But, we'll be staying at the Hilton President July 16th for the Paul McCartney show. We were going to hit Bristol just because it's right there.

Any other suggestions?

Actually, I'm out in the hinterlands - out by the airport/KCI Expo Center where it's cheap! My choices are Wendy's, Cracker Barrel and Waffle House. I think I saw a Chuck E Cheese.

My trip to Power and Light (almost $60 by cab, each way, ouch) was to get to Cosentino's to set in provisions to get me through the week.

Life was a bit better in St. Louis and I'm hoping for better in Boston and Philadephia. But I've got take what comes.

Yeah, I'll never understand why they built KCI approximately 150 miles outside of town. I don't even consider that to still be Kansas City out there. I'd be singing the praises of St. Louis as well were I holed up out there.

Actually, St. Louis is a fine city. KC is too, but not quite as visitor friendly.

St Louis, I just got to stay closer to the city, so more food choice.

As for Kansas City, the airport isn't even in the same State...as most of the city ;-)

Aieee! Now I'm distracted. Need to regain work focus or I'll be here until Christmas.

Actually the airport is in Missouri, and the residential and commercial areas have grown out to meet it. There is a thriving part of Kansas City, Missouri, near the airport. My brother lives there. There is no doubt that the Kansas City metro area is quite spread out, and sprawls across two states.

I find that there are more excellent restaurants downtown now than in Westport or the Plaza. Excellent restaurants downtown (which to me includes the River Market and Crossroads areas, thus 1st Street to 22nd Street) include Affare, Extra Virgin, Michael Smith, Jack Stack Barbecue, Grunaer, Lidia's, Le Fou Frog, Aixois, Makers Mark, 801 Chop House, Cigar Box, Anthony's, Garozzo's, BRGR, Milwaukee Delicatessan, Webster House, Blue Nile, Drum Room,, Rieger Hotel Grill, Farmhouse, Drunken Fish. I am no doubt missing some. Also, the home base of Christopher Elbow's chocolates is downtown, and just incredible.

I don't really think of Bristol as one of the top downtown restaurants. It's O.K., but not as good as many of the restaurants on my list, in my humble opinion.
