Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 i recently purchased a CD of dubious provenance from a well-respected store here in new york. it is the sun ra arkestra live at judson hall 1964. on the front cover it mentioned featuring pharaoah sanders, black harold and alan silva. what is this album? is it legit at all? the sound quality is pretty bad. sounds almost like a radio broacast with some static. also there are some ugly cuts between tracks. the track listing is- gods on a safari the whorld shadow rocket no. 9 the voice of pan dawn over israel space mates anyone ever hear of this album? i haven't had luck finding out about it online. thank you. the music is ok, by the way. a bit out, but not crazily so. but the sound quality is a bummer slightly. (it is better than the roswell rudd free america disc though!) Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 oh also it seems like this disc is only 25 minutes long. overall, not a great purchase. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 That is a ripoff from a Saturn LP (165) known as "Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold." Mike Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 thanks mike. does that LP have crappy sound quality and is it real short? and there hasn't been a CD release-has there? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I don't own the LP but it wouldn't surprise me. Quality wasn't job #1 for El Saturn. There has been no legit CD reissue. Sounds like you have everything. Mike Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 wow i bet the original vinyl goes for a ton of money and would be even more of a jip than this CD. it does seem like there is some pretty flute duetting going on. just not enough meat. Quote
rostasi Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Yup, bad sound quality just for the fanatical. You may want to avoid this one as well: Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 i must say i am disappointed in a store selling this CD for 14.99 which turns out to be a vinyl rip and is also really short and also has booty sound quality. though i am the idiot for buying it. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Now, THAT's been issued on legit CD. At least I think it's legit. Unfortunately cover is b&w and slightly altered - missing the hieroglyphics! Mike Quote
jazzbo Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Huh, I have the Saturn, and the cd of Black Mass. Admittedly not great sound, but I listen to WORSE for the music. The music on these are worth listening through to, so to speak, for me. Quote
l p Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 there is very little music on black mass. from moudry's site: <<A Black Mass This is a sort of radio horror play written by LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka) and based on the Nation of Islam story of the evil angel Yaqub. Ra and the Arkestra provide incidental music. The backing is mostly spare and low-volume, so as not to drown out the players. >> Quote
jazzbo Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I dig it. It's definitely a product of it's time and place . . . and space. . . is the place. Quote
7/4 Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Where is Juson Hall? I know there is a Judson Memorial Church in NYC, Washington Sq. Park, South. Same place? y/n Quote
rostasi Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I dig it. It's definitely a product of it's time and place . . . and space. . . is the place. ← You can say that again! It does have a history and feel - i just wish there was more playing and less doodlin...(and less "let's kill whitey" too ) now, here's somethin' that's a snapshot of history: Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Judson Hall was at 165 W. 57th Street, NYC, across the street from Carnegie Hall. In early 1971, Judson Hall was renamed CAMI Hall. CAMI is Columbia Artists Management, Inc. http://www.cami.com/about/history.asp The hall is a New York City landmark. Mike Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 i recently purchased a CD of dubious provenance from a well-respected store here in new york. I think I know the store. I love the place, but they are selling CD-Rs of out-of-print albums/CDs with photocopied artwork. I have avoided buying them because of my misgivings. I haven't asked the clerks at the store what the story is with these CDs--don't want to sound like I'm a mole from the RIAA. Quote

Guest akanalog Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 yeah then the idea of them profiting and the artist not profiting seems sort of gross. unless artists ARE compensated. it's too bad so much good music has never and might never be on CD since it does make many of these albums appealing. i did ask once what the deal was and the guy got irritated and said the CDs are bought used from someone else so they are "used" CDs. except then sell them for used prices!!! clifford_thornton Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I'd love to hear that shit with Pharaoh and Black Harold, actually. Better than shelling out $500 for the LP! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Though as we've said before, it's pretty dubious what DMG are doing. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 no one was namin' names in this thread! Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 (edited) Though as we've said before, it's pretty dubious what XXX are doing. ← I'm hoping they are paying the artists some $$$, otherwise it's really ballsy to do this in a store in a city where a large percentage of the artists involved live!
