Jim R Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 I had just posted about this CD in a Barry Galbraith topic, and it occured to me that I don't know the origins (original releases, if any) of this music, which was apparently recorded in NYC in 1956. The Fresh Sound notes give no details on that. I had thought this was from the Epic LP "The Rhythm Section" (Epic 3271), but apparently not. I had that LP years ago, but didn't keep it. FWIW, that session included Freddie Green, and this CD includes some tracks with Jimmy Cleveland. The data I have: Hank Jones, Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson, Jimmy Cleveland (on "Jimmy's tune", "wolf talk", "sahara" and "blues") blues for sal, polka dots and moonbeams, jimmy's tune, minor's club, they look alike, he was too good to me,ain't we got fun, wolf talk, milt's on stilts, mambosies, out of braith, the legal nod,do nothin' till you hear from me,hallelujah, sahara, mona's feeling lonely, kookin' in the kitchen, walk chicken walk with your head picked bald to the bone, ruby my dear, koolin' on the settee, blues Quote

Jim R Posted November 6, 2005 Author Report Posted November 6, 2005 Thanks. I guess Freddie Green was not on "The Rhythm Section" session. Not sure where I saw that... Quote
jazztrain Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 I just picked up a used copy of this. It consists of material drawn from three different Epic LPs. As best as I can tell, it has: all of Epic LN3271 (The Rhythm Section) a portion of LN3339 (After Hours Jazz) a portion of LN3297 (Rhythm Plus One) The tunes with Jimmy Cleveland were originally on Rhythm Plus One (Wolf Talk, Sahara, and Blues) and on After Hours Jazz (Jimmy's Tune). hallelujah, mona's feeling lonely, out of braith, the legal nod, polka dots and moonbeams, minor's club, they look alike, do nothin' till you hear from me, kookin' in the kitchen, walk chicken walk with your head picked bald to the bone, ruby my dear, koolin' on the settee, were EPIC LN 3271 The Rhythm Section blues for sal, milt's on stilts, he was too good to me, jimmy's tune, ain't we got fun, mambosies, were on EPIC LN 3339 After Hours Jazz which also included 2 more tracks by the rhythm section with Conte Candoli or Gene Quill, two by Sahib Shihab, and one each by Ronnel Bright and Ray Bryant. Ted O'Reilly Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 Also, the French "Jazz Originals" series produced by Henri Renaud issued the Epics ['The Rhythm Section' (LN 3271) and "After Hours Jazz" (LN 3339)] as a 2-CD set on Columbia 477402 2. "The Rhythm Section" was all Jones/Galbraith/Hinton/Johnson from April and May 1956. "After Hours Jazz" (a compilation release) had That 4some on 3 tracks from the April and May sessions, added a vibist (Marty Wilson) on one; Candoli on one; Cleveland one; and Quill on one track. The 5 other tracks on "After Hours Jazz" don't have The 4Some... Quote
sgcim Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 Does this set have a lot of Galbraith solos on it, or is it another session where Galbraith takes a few and mainly plays rhythm for Jones? Quote
jazztrain Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I didn't count the number of solos by Galbraith, but I do remember thinking that there were more solos by him than you typically get. Quote
