Dan Gould Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Looking at an E.P., "Joe Sings The Blues", Williams with the Basie Band. Columbia SEG 8016 Date given is 1959. Tunes are Baby Won't You Please Come Home Ain't No Use Good Morning Blues Very confusing. Wasn't Basie a Clef or a Roulette recording artist throughout the 50s? It occured to me that this might be from the "Just The Blues" Roulette album, but the tunes aren't there, and that was 1960 anyway. Can anyone shed some light on how this one came about and whether the music is available elsewhere? Thanks! Quote
brownie Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Dan, that's a British Columbia EP reissue of Clef/Verve material. Columbia England was distributing the Clef/Verve catalogue back in the late fifties. Quote
couw Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 These tunes are indeed originally issued on Roulette and stem from the 24/25 September 1959 session. The Columbia EP was issued in England I believe. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 UK Columbia issues of the 50s/60s were produced by EMI, Hayes, Middlesex. Quote

brownie Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 I have checked the Chris Sheridan biobook. All three tunes were recorded for Roulette on September 24, 1959. The UK Columbia EP is listed in the various releases from the session. Quote
Jim R Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Gentlemen, I noticed that the answers to this question were at least a full 15 minutes in coming. 15 minutes!! Obviously, that ain't gonna cut it around here. We're simply going to have to do better than that. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 6, 2005 Author Report Posted November 6, 2005 Actually, 17 minutes til couw came through with the specific Roulette date. Quote
