Last Friday night, the day after Thanksgiving I headed up to a tiny little club near downtown L.A. because I saw in the L.A. Weekly that the Freddie Redd trio was playing there. The club is called Cafe Metropol on Third Street about 1/2 mile east of downtown in the Industrial Wasteland that is now known as "the Artist's Disctrict" Anyway, the place had good food and an interesting wine selection and was very inexpensive. There was a $5 cover and Freddie did three sets starting at 8 PM. He's 77 years old but still plays with the combonation of fire and lyricism that is the hallmark of his (all too few) recordings. He did a "Laura" that seemed to stop time--really, REALLY something. I hadn't heard Freddie live since the mid-1990's--he really has been pretty quiet lately and it's nice to see and hear him playing again!

Anyway, between sets Freddie told me that he will be appearing once a month "as long as they'll have me" at the Metropol.

The website isn't updated through December yet, but this is where you'll find our when Freddie is playing next

I will be in LA 1/27-1/31. Do you know anywhere else he might be during that period? If it's at the same time that month, I may luck out. I must make sure to book my flight for 1/27 in order to arrive early enough. I'm seeing Wayne on 1/28, and a Lee Morgan tribute on 1/30 (details soon). If I can see Freddie Redd as well, that will just be awesome!!!

I have phone number for Freddie, I'll try to call him before I fly out. I'll check that website you mentioned as the date approaches.

Thanks for the heads up. This news made my day!

If you're here on the 27th you should check out Danny Grissett, John Heard and Lorca Hart out at Charlie O's--Danny is back in town only for a week, but the synergy among these three GREAT players is really something to hear!! If you need more information, let me know . . .

Yeah, I heard about/missed that Freddie Redd gig too, and have been keeping my eyes and ears open for his next. It's just good to know that he's back at it; hopefully I can catch him soon.

Bertrand, you're gonna have a busy trip next month! ;)

I was told by Jeff Gauthier that Nels & Alex Cline & others will be playing the music of Andrew Hill at Club Tropical in Culver City on 2/3, I believe, if you will be around that long.

Also, for more general information for Crypto Artists,

I still need to get tickets to that Wayne Shorter show.

When & where is the Lee Morgan tribute?

Bertrand, here is a link for you with LA Jazz Listings: L.A. Jazz

I believe the Lee Morgan Tribute will have my old buddy, bassist Tom Warrington, featured in the group also.

Adam,

The Wayne Shorter show was almost sold out when I got my tickets, and this was before thanksgiving. A word of warning...

Let's try to do an LA organissimo get-together, maybe around the Lee Morgan tribute. If all goes well, they should be playing a couple of the unrecorded tunes I found at the Library of Congress.

I'll probably be staying in Pasadena.

By the way, Allan, how do you know about the Lee Morgan gig? Is it somewhere on the web? The American Jazz Institute's site has not been updated yet.

Ah, so Claremont will have more shows. I made it to only one last round, the Dewey Redman. And even that I got to late due to traffic. But it was a good crowd, and he was in great tune, although more conservative than I would have expected. Those shows are in a large faculty dining room, and are not easy to find. That said, the Redman show was totally sold out by the time I got there, and I listened to much of it from outside the door. :bad:

Yes, let's have a get together when you are here. We can also see what might be up at the Jazz Bakery by then.

I saw Shorter last time he was in LA, and he was fabulous. But I think this show is ore orchestral , not jazz. I've also heard that even when Disney Hall is "sold out," one can usually get tickets at the door. That said, I still need to get tickets for Shorter and for the Maria Schneider Orchestra, which is playing there a bit later.

How about a trip out to the Valley to Charlie O's--THE best jazz club in L.A.!! On Friday and Saturday night John Heard and Roy McCurdy are joined by various piano and horn players--John is my favorite living bass player and Roy McCurdy's work speaks for itself (to stay with Cannonball for 9 years means A LOT!!).

Anyway, lets all meet up there one night . . .

I haven't been to Charlie O's in several years. Ironically, I used to live in Van Nuys, not far from the place, but then they started playing jazz regularly and I moved...

Man, there's no way I'd miss a Freddie Redd club hit right now. He hasn't toured to Chicago or Detroit in how many years? You guys are missing out on one of the great composer/pianists, and at 77 it's hard to say how many more of those club dates he'll have. AND, of course, the club needs to see people in the door. Don't let the tiny things in life keep you away from such an authentic jazz musician. And thanks for the note about his activity. Does he have an agent, or does he tour at all anymore (other than festivals)?
