ghost of miles
Hey all, I'm putting together the Dec. 10 Night Lights program about Henry Grimes that will include some interview segments with him... what are some of your favorite late 1950s/1960s Grimes solos? So far, these are the musical tracks that I'll be using: Perry Robinson 4, "Funk Dumpling" Sonny Rollins, "There Will Never Be Another You" (RCA studio) Sonny Rollins, "On Green Dolphin Street" (broadcast, excerpt) Albert Ayler, "Ol' Man River" (take 2) Henry Grimes, "Son of Alfalfa"' Pharoah Sanders, "Japan" Don Cherry, "Elephantasy" (excerpt) Will probably use "Flowers for Albert" off the recent Grimes/Drake/Murray CD as well. I'd like to pull an excerpt out of the two Cecil Blue Notes, too. Some of these choices are being influenced by the amount of time I have to use between breaks, etc. Thanks much in advance for your thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc.
brownie
An early solo by Grimes I always appreciated was the one he took at the end of 'Moon Rays' on the Roy Haynes 'Out In the Afternoon' album for Impulse with Roland Kirk! Also an impressive solo on the following track 'Fly Me To The Moon' from the same album! Edited December 5, 2005 by brownie
clifford_thornton
Funny, those are the same two I was thinking of!
ep1str0phy
I'm adding this 'cause I just got the album: Charles Tyler: Black Mysticism (from Charles Tyler Ensemble, ESP) Grimes is just outrageous with the multi-stops. I love it when he cuts loose.
clifford_thornton
Yeah, side two of that record is phenomenal. Freedman is a motherfucker too.
ghost of miles
Thanks much for the suggestions--wish I had the Tyler. I'm going to use one of the two Haynes tracks; also going to use the last four and a half minutes of Cecil's "Conquistador."
