Z-Man Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Phil Schaap, in his liner notes to the 1999 Columbia/Legacy CD reissue of "Black, Brown, & Beige", claims that the originally issued title track of "Blues In Orbit" was master number 40626-1 recorded on 2/4/58, while most discographies list the originally issued take as 40626-6, recorded on 2/12/58. The 2004 Columbia/Legacy CD reissue of "Blues In Orbit" includes 40626-6 as the originally issued title track, contradictory to Schaap's statement. So who is correct? Can anyone verify if the original Blues In Orbit LP contains the same master take of the title tune as the 2004 Columbia/Legacy reissue? As an aside, the 2004 Blues In Orbit CD claims to include a "previously unissued" alternate of the title tune, though this take (40626-2) was included on the aforementioned "Black, Brown, & Beige" CD reissue. Chuck Nessa Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Looks like more Schaap crap. My original (Columbia CL 1445, mono, 6 eye) plays the same as the "master" on the current cd. Quote
Kalo Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Looks like more Schaap crap. The definitive assessment. And it rhymes, too. I'm still pissed about the alternate take of "Up and Down, Up and Down (I Will Lead Them Up and Down)" that he somehow substituted for the master on the Columbia/Legacy CD of Such Sweet Thunder. jazzbo Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Ah, much ado about nothing! I never could find the origiinal lp of that one, so a substituted take doesn't really get me all riled up. Nothing Phil does has. Blues in Orbit. . . what a great reissue. Sounds 98% as good as the Mobile Fidelity SACD and has a lot longer running time. . . ! Quote
WD45 Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Listened to this on my walk in to work today. It put a spring in my step regardless of the -4 degree weather! It does sound great. You can hear that studio. Quote
Kalo Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Hey, I love Blues in Orbit too. No problems with Duke, just with Schaap. Kept my Such Sweet Thunder vinyl as well. And I'm mighty glad I did. Quote
medjuck Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 The correct take from Such Sweet Thunder is available on cd: it's on a cd release about Ralph Ellison. Sorry I can't remember the name of it right now but it's a good compilation. Quote

Yeah, just when the hell is that going to be corrected? Quote
