How are the following Mingus CDs, all of which have Joe Chambers on them?

1) Mingus And Friends In Concert

The size of the orchestra has always made me wary, as well as the Cosby intros. Is there still some good music on this? How prominent is Joe Chambers? I believe he's the only drummer on this one.

2) Me Myself An Eye/Something Like A Bird

I'll probably get this one anyway, since it's a cheap 2-CD set. But is this remastered from vinyl or from tape? I usually don't buy Collectable stuff. Here, Joe is one of several drummer/precussionists. Can you hear him at all? I think I could recognize his playing after all these years.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mingus, but I'm not a Mingus completist.

Thanks,

Bertrand.

Joe Chambers is the only drummer (with a large group), I believe, on Mingus and Friends in concert, which has some very fine music, as well as some chaotic pieces that don't come out right.

Joe Chambers is one of two to four drummers (plus percussionists) on Something Like a Bird/Me Myself an Eye. I believe he is one of the four featured drummers on the sidelong piece, Three Worlds of Drums.

I like both, but they are on the low end of priority in LPs released by Mr. Mingus.

What they said.

Be advised that "Me Myself"/"Something Like a Bird" is a late-in-life recording on which the ailing Mingus didn't play.

My rule of thumb for Mingus records is to be wary of those on which Dannie Richmond isn't the drummer.

well i don't really agree with that rule of thumb. walter perkins did some stuff with mingus and i like his style, for instance.

I also agree with these assessments. I have both, am glad to have them, value many Mingus releases much higher than them.
