i disagree with this choice. this album is CTI and has people like the brecker brothers on it which gives it a commercial sheen and a sort of jive white vibe which better choices would not have.

in fact, i think muhammed's final prestige albums are probably better choices. especially the one with the femals vocals, which are done by his wife, i think.

these albums were collected on the idris muhammed legends of acid jazz disc and are called i think "black rhythm revolution" and "peace and rhythm".

I absolutely agree. There's some Les McCann stuff that goes a lot better than many, as well...

Great idea...

Besides that BN compilation mentioned ("--Strikes A Radical Chord"), there was also another one released a couple of years ago by BN/Emi France, called "Say It Loud! Brotherhood, Pride & Groove on Blue Note". Features a wide variety of (mostly 'electric') stuff, from that Gene Harris' Sly Stone cover to Eddie Gale and Grant Green. But I think that previously mentioned one is better and a really good choice for your purpose.

Some other ideas... Gary Bartz's NTU Troop, sure. Also, how about Cannonball's "Walk Tall"? Or erm... Joe Henderson's "If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem"? The Black Jazz label is obviously worth checking out. Some free avant garde guys like Shepp probably made stuff in the same vein, just can't pinpoint any specific ones.

And if you don't limit yourself to strictly jazz, there's of course groups like the Last Poets or the Watts Prophets.
