spinlps Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 Classic is also reissuing Coltrane's One Down, One Up on a double LP. They also released two new jazz releases on their internal Straight Ahead imprint on LP. Quote

spinlps Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I wonder if this means that Classic will return to their Verve reissue program of the early 90's or perhaps begin an Impulse reissue series. Speakers Corners seemed to take over the Verve LP reissues, particularly the Fitzgerald, Getz, and, to a lesser extent, Webster releases. They defintely raised the bar and presented, IMO, an excellent product... the Ella Gershwin Box is outstanding in sound, pressing quality and packaging. SC's Impulse reissues were also outstanding and far better than Universal's mid-90's offerings. Absolutely no contest for the three titles I picked up: Coltrane / Hartman, Body and Soul, and Ballads. Classic has a love / hate relationship with the audiophile community. I'm just grateful they're taking the time and apparent care in reissuing the BN catalog; better quality than the cheap, Scorpio pressings and the last BN vinyl source since Mosaic has exited that market. Let's hope the start to mine the Verve Vault and release some choice titles. Wouldn't that be ironic? Available via iTunes or on 200g virgin vinyl... Quote

Are these LPs made from original mono tapes or from folded down stereo tapes? Some labels destroyed the mono tapes and only kept the stereo ones after stereo became the standard. Claude Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Answering my own question, it looks like Classic Records used a mono tape whenever available but folded down the stereo tape on some releases: http://www.classicrecords.com/catalog/stor...cfm?sku=BN-4123 http://www.classicrecords.com/catalog/stor...sku=BN-4074-200 http://www.classicrecords.com/catalog/stor...cfm?sku=BN-4045 Quote
Z-Man Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I'm curious about the process of "folding down" to mono from stereo masters. Does anyone have details? Quote
jazzhound Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I'm curious about the process of "folding down" to mono from stereo masters. Does anyone have details? take stereo source and put it through a summing amplifier and you have mono. Quote

porcy62 Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Ran into the Hobson interview of Larry Cohn(The Blue Note Collector) at Classic Records site. HERE When I was reading the interview I realized that I am not a "collector", because I play my records. A good news for my analist, he has to cure my obsession about high heels and women's legs only. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Not only a collector but the 'collector's collector', no less.. Quote
Allan Songer Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Ran into the Hobson interview of Larry Cohn(The Blue Note Collector) at Classic Records site. HERE I've known Larry for a long time--he's nuts, but also a REALLY great guy. He has taught me so much about Blue Note and it always ready to talk about it! He has also bought quite a few records from me over the years and has horse-traded a few as well. He gets an A+ from me . . . Quote
sidewinder Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Get's a from me, a most interesting interview. Quote
