Jazz Kat Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Seeing Medeski Martin Wood tomorrow night in New Jersey. I hope it will be good. Anyone know what their concerts are like? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 their concerts suck, IMO. they do plinky noodly stuff and then coalesce it into something more grooving. and they will repeat this throughout the night. serious abuse of tension and release. sort of a cheap and obvious trick to keep using, IMO. Guy Berger Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 (edited) they do plinky noodly stuff and then coalesce it into something more grooving. and they will repeat this throughout the night. That more or less covers it. It's nice in small doses but a bit excessive across two hours. edit: Didn't mean to agree with the statement "their concerts suck". Repetitive, but enjoyable. Aggie87 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 (edited) Isn't that kind of the definition of a jam band? What more do you expect from them? They aren't a traditional hard bop band. And I realize they're not a traditional Dead/ABB/Widespread etc jam band, but an organ trio jam band, firmly capable of playing jazz. Not my favorite group by any stretch, but I say go and enjoy the show, jazzkat. As a young teenager, why shouldn't you enjoy this? Edited February 23, 2006 by Aggie87 Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 JK, you should check it out, of course. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Hmm, I always enjoy seeing them. Of course, I've always seen them as part of festivals on the bill with many other bands and they usually only play for an hour, so maybe 2 hours would get a little old after awhile. The last time I saw them was probably close to 10 years ago, too... so things may have changed. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 (edited) 15 minutes late, the band arrived on stage. Acoustic groove, audience heads bopping. First half hour, sign of hippies dancing in the isle. Medeski jammin', Martin groovin, Wood at the bottom. First hour, intermission. Hippies stop dancing, and most people go to the rest room. 15 minutes later, MMW returns on the stage. They open up this groovin number, and a whole bunch of people go running up to the stage, dancing like assholes. The first smell of deadheads blazin' up, getting a headache from all the weed they're smoking. Guy dancing standing up in front of me, get him to sit down. Staff makes people sit down, hippies still are dancing in the isles, though somewhat entertaining... and hilarious. The show continues, they finish, come back for an encore, and the show is over. What a night. All in all, a nice preformance. Edited February 24, 2006 by Jazz Kat Quote

Jazz Kat Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 They're all great musicians. I'm sure they can run through tunes like Giant Steps, and Confirmation, but this is what they do. I still like what they do, but their scene is really stupid. Quote
