bluesbro Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 I just got the album she made with Brownie and well, what can I say So, where do I go from here? I was thinking of going chronologically and get all her early albums, which only seem to be available in expensive japanese imports. What are her absolute best recordings? Quote
Free For All Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Featuring arrangements by Gil Evans. A must-have IMHO. And there is much more to hear. I believe there is a thread somewhere around here that will enlighten you further. I expect we'll get some good suggestions from Lon (jazzbo) and others. Helen's the greatest! Enjoy! Quote

The Complete Helen Merrill On Mercury Vol 1-4 is outstanding but will be difficult to obtain. Quote

GA Russell Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 I really like You've Got a Date with the Blues, which was released on Verve in the late 80s, but I think was originally recorded for a Leonard Feather label in the mid 50s. Quote
