Randy Twizzle Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I was brought up to never question the NY Times, but that was a long time ago. From a 3/19 metro section article about the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood: A milestone in the neighborhood's evolution was the opening in 1977 of Manhattan Plaza, two Mitchell-Lama government-subsidized rental towers with 3,500 tenants where 70 percent of the apartments were reserved for workers in the performing arts. Celebrities like Tennessee Williams, Larry David and John Coltrane all lived there during less profitable stretches of their careers. Quote
Free For All Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 lived there during less profitable stretches of their careers. Yes, being dead really limits your ability to play gigs. Quote
bertrand Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 And yet, Hendrix put out TONS of records after his death. Bertrand. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Dying can make or break a career. Jim Morrison really racked up after dying, but a lot of performers just seem to stiffen up. It's a real gamble, that's for sure... Quote
7/4 Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 I know a couple of people who live there. Still obscure... Quote
Ron S Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Are they dead? Oh wait, you said they live there. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 I know a few (well known) folks living there "back when". Ricky Ford even named a record for the place. Quote
Kalo Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Has anyone solved the mystery of how Coltrane could have lived there posthumously? Did Judith Miller write the original NYT story? Quote
BruceH Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Has anyone solved the mystery of how Coltrane could have lived there posthumously? Did Judith Miller write the original NYT story? Don't you know? Coltrane transcended normal human limitations. Quote
