Email This Article | Print This Article [-] Text [+] LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - June Pointer, youngest of the Pointer Sisters pop group whose hits included "Fire," "Slow Hand" and "I'm So Excited," died of cancer at age 52 on Wednesday, a family spokesman said. Two of her sisters, Ruth and Anita, and two brothers, Aaron and Fritz, were at her side at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica when she died, the spokesman said. Her third sister, Bonnie, was unable to be present, the spokesman added. The type of cancer was not disclosed. The sisters, who received their vocal training at their father's church in West Oakland, California, began as a quartet in the 1970s and become a trio when their sister Bonnie left to pursue a solo career in the 1980s. http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews....NTER.xml&rpc=22 Quote
catesta Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 She was the youngest. I enjoyed the Pointer Sisters music on many dance floors. R.I.P. Quote
Christiern Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 (edited) Interesting that Bonnie Pointer couldn't make it--she seems to have distanced herself from the family a few years back. Anyone know what happened? rostasi Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 (edited) I remember reading something "special" or "different" about her relationship with the rest. This was a few years back in, I think, Waxpoetics - I'll see if I can dig it up. Rod Edited April 12, 2006 by rostasi Quote
PHILLYQ Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 I saw the Pointer Sisters in concert in the 70s as an opening act for the Brecker Brothers(Yes, it was billed as 'Brothers & Sisters'). At that time they hadn't yet gone into strictly pop/disco stuff, and they came out dressed to the nines(in the NYC muggy summer) in 30s style garb and proceeded to do an entire set of swing music1 They made quite an impression on me that night. mikeweil Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 R.I.P. The Pointer Sisters were a terrific live act. The tracks from their albums that I find indispensable would fit on 1 CD, however, and be mostly from their first 4 albums. One of them had the type of voice that gives me the goosebumps, but I never could find out who it was .... Quote
Noj Posted April 13, 2006 Report Posted April 13, 2006 I'll have to play "Don't It Drive You Crazy" in her honor. RIP. Quote
