Is it just me that thinks the this apology is unnecessary?

Agent: Tiger sorry for 'spaz' remark

By The Associated Press

Fri Apr 14, 5:32 PM

Tiger Woods' agent issued an apology Friday for the golf star calling himself a ``spaz'' after the Masters last week.

``Tiger meant nothing derogatory to any person or persons and apologizes for any offense caused,'' IMG agent Mark Steinberg said on Woods' official Web site.

After finishing tied for third at the Masters on Sunday, Woods said, ``I putted atrociously today. Once I got on the greens, I was a spaz.''

The word ``spaz'' is considered by some people a derogatory way of referring to someone with physical coordination problems.

This report isn't exactly completely accurate.

In Great Britain specifically, "spaz" is considered deragatory for those with muscular dystrophy and similar afflictions. So Tiger was specifically reacting to the uproar there.

FWIW, a friend who works in Special Ed is highly sensitive and critical to the term "retard" or "'tard" - is that "political correctness run amok"? I vote no.

The funny thing is, most everyone seems to believe tha political correctness has "run amok" except when it involves them or someone they know. -_-

So now Tiger has to worry about offending those in other countries due to harmless remarks he makes here? Should Brits stop calling cigarettes "fags?"

When wil it stop?

Dear god, please make it stop!

Agree.

It's getting to the point where we can't say anything without someone getting uptight about it.

I think people who get offended easily aren't told "tough titties" nearly often enough. :P

That's offensive to women.

Women with formidable breasts or women in general?

In case anyone's confused, I've been kidding around in this thread. If so advised, I will issue a formal apology through my agent.

The anti-PC, or "pro-asshole" movement has used it as a bludgeon to pound down those who might be a bit more sensitive to others conditions or positions in life. Why is that perceived as a weakness? Acting decent has run amok? WTF?

As both an anti-PC type and an asshole I'm deeply offended by your anger.

It's really very simple: Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity. There are a lot of people (women, African-Americans, Homosexuals, Mentally Handicapped individuals) who are sick and tired of being causally insulted by people saying things like "retard," "fag," etc. ("Fag" in England as a term for cigarettes is entirely different, btw. It doesn't derive from the word "faggot" as a derogatory term for gays. Rather it derives from the word "faggot" meaning "kindling." It's similar to the fact that the word "dyke" wouldn't be offensive in Holland, where it refers to a manmade structure keeping out the ocean, but is in America where it is offensive slang for lesbians.) Believe it or not, it IS possible to express oneself WITHOUT using either insensitve terms for the handicapped or PC jargon. If a person screws up and calls him or herself a "spaz," he IS using a (rather obscure) perjorative term. May not bother you, but try being a person with CP for a moment. When you really can't control your voluntary muscle movements, the word "spaz" is going to seem hurtful. If respecting the humanity of the individual means losing some time-honored locutions, so be it. There was a time when it were perfectly OK to refer to a black man you didn't know as "boy" or "coon" (among other things). I'm sure there were a lot of people who had to adjust when the Civil Rights movement came along and said, "No more."
