BeBop Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 For example, a small bunch of Blue Notes under $9.99. Same with Verve. And OJC. Yawn. I suppose the upside is that (they claim) every CD is on sale. Quote
Guest Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 I picked up a few things last weekend. The Clifford Brown Memorial album for $7.99. I've wanted that record for a long time because I firmly believe that Brownie was the perfect jazz musician. Can't stop playing it. I love it. Elmo Hope and Lou Donaldson and a rare (albeit 8 bar) Percy Heath bass solo. Small Talk at 125th and Lennox - On sale and worth every penny. Gil Scott-Heron is such a cat. Coletrane Time - Hmmmm. Great band, not sure about Cecil Taylor at this point. It was a pretty disorganized sale and took a good time investment to come away with those 3 CDs. Then again, I've never really regretted time spent shopping for music. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 Coletrane Time - Hmmmm. Great band, not sure about Cecil Taylor at this point. Not gonna bust your balls for the misspelling BUT why would you base any opinion of Cecil on this odd date? Quote

Not gonna bust your balls for the misspelling BUT why would you base any opinion of Cecil on this odd date? Sorry for the spelling. I wouldn't base an opinion of Cecil Taylor on this session and I don't know if he is elsewhere in my collection. It's the first time that his playing has jumped off of a record at me to the point that I've picked it up to see who was on piano. It did indeed strike me as an odd date. And, I don't have an opinion on him yet, which is why I said "not sure about Cecil Taylor at this point." What should I know about him? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 And, I don't have an opinion on him yet, which is why I said "not sure about Cecil Taylor at this point." What should I know about him? I'll leave that for others. FWIW, I have 67 cds, 10 lps and uncounted tapes of Mr. Taylor. Quote
Guest Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Wow, that's a lot. I didn't love his playing on this session, but I didn't really love anyone's playing on this session. I'd like to hear some things that are perhaps more typical for him so that I could form an opinion. I'm not sure what Coltrane was going for with this date, but it wasn't what I expected, which may be my fault. Or it may be that he didn't quite get there. I'll listen to it again and see where it leaves me. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Well... we are sidetracking the Tower Sale thread (sorry BeBop)... but... Troy, hearing some things that are "typical" of Cecil is in itself a problem -- I'm still very much a Cecil "newbie", and the only thing I can say for sure is that he is anything but typical. You would really need to listen a lot of different things to even begin to form an accurate opinion. Having said that, check out some of his "earlier" works first: Looking Ahead (Contemporary/OJC) Jazz Advance (Transition - Blue Note) Cecil Taylor Quartet at Newport (Verve) The Cecil Taylor Unit/Roswell Rudd Sextet - Mixed (Impulse) Love for Sale (Blue Note) The World of Cecil Taylor (Candid) New York City R&B (Candid) Conquistador & Unit Structures (Blue Note) Quote

Now, see how nicely we got back on track? Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Is the TAXDAY6 code still good for another 15%? I ordered 8 cds on Monday for a good deal. Quote

The session was not what I expected and the piano playing itself really jumped out at me as something a bit uncomfortable. I didn't draw any conclusions from it. It could have just been reconciling to my expecations based on the tunes they were recording and who was playing (Kenny Dorham, Chuck Isreals). Just meant it to be a "hmmm..." Quote
BeBop Posted April 19, 2006 Author Report Posted April 19, 2006 Well... we are sidetracking the Tower Sale thread (sorry BeBop)... but... I'd rather be talking Cecil Taylor than this sale! Quote

Just saying this was a Cecil date, nomatter the current packaging. This session is famous for the problems in the studio. Cecil was happy with Coltrane's playing but the recording (as a whole) is a bump in the road for Cecil. Once all this is absorbed, it's a fascinating document. Don't dump it - you might grow into it. Lazaro Vega Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Picked up three from this sale. Jackie McLean "Let Freedom Ring" to replace the vinyl; Booker Little, "Booker Little 4 & Max Roach" (never owned); and Lee Konitz and the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, "Konitz Meets Mulligan." Love that stuff on the Mosaic set, so, again, replacing an LP..... Quote
rostasi Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 Well, I just got back from taking advantage of a Tower sale that was not tepid. All titles on sale from the 18th to the 23rd. Of course, on some titles this means that they're brought down to only 10% over reasonable price, but, hey, that's something, I suppose. There's a good chunk under $10 tho... Rod Quote
