David Ayers Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 Apologies to those not interested in classical - thought this might interest some: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/newsMainTempla...newssectionID=1 Quote
Claude Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 This move by Warner reduces the so-called majors in the classical record arena to just EMI, Universal and Sony-BMG. Just like in jazz, there has been a tendency in classical music that the small labels are the most active, while the large companies focus on their back catalogue. But Naxos must also be counted among the "majors" now, since it is the largest classical label in terms of in-print recordings and recording activity. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 How about selling their back catalogue to one of the others? They'll probably take better care of it - some day nobody at Warner's will know what to do with it. Quote

I don't think their reissue series Apex and Elatus are that bad, except for the covers. http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/search/-/d...hnaeppchen/4205 http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/search/-/d...hnaeppchen/4204 Anyway, what they own (1970's-1990's recordings from the Teldec and Erato catalogues) is not as prestigious as the Universal (DG/Decca/Phillips), Columbia or EMI back catalogues. mikeweil Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 (edited) I'm afraid Chuck is right ... If you know the original Erato releases and compare the laughable booklets of the Apex CDs ... Erato was covering much of French music that no other label would have considered. Edited June 7, 2006 by mikeweil Quote
