Brad Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 For those who may be interested, Eric Clapton is going to be on tour in September. He's going to be at Madison Square Garden on September 28 and 29. My son has lately become interested in the blues and Clapton's playing so we were lucky enough to get tickets for the 28th. Speaking of which, we picked up for him the 2 DVD of the Guitar DVD set, Crossroads, that Clapton sponsored a couple of years ago in Dallas. What a fantastic set. It's got guitarists of all stripes, mostly rock and blues, however. But what an awesome concert it must have been to go to. Quote

I think Derek will emerge from this tour as a better guitarist and performer due in no small part to his exposure to Clapton. Robert Cray who has been, and will continue to open shows on the latest tour could probably teach him a thing or two. Quote
7/4 Posted June 8, 2006 Report Posted June 8, 2006 I think Derek will emerge from this tour as a better guitarist and performer due in no small part to his exposure to Clapton. He's pretty amazing now. Clapton just gives him more exposure. I think lessons from Ali Akbar Khan have influenced him more than touring with Clapton. Quote

Eric is a nice player and all, but Derek is just plain ridiculous. Hopefully, playing with Derek might do Eric some good! Quote

That said, I believe Clapton still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Quote
GregN Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 Clapton has some depth and maturity of playing that will do Derek good. imho g Derek surpassed EC in depth and maturity of playing years ago, imo. Eric is a nice player and all, but Derek is just plain ridiculous. Hopefully, playing with Derek might do Eric some good! I am certain that Clapton will be inspired by Derek. I am inspired by Derek. My point is that Clapton does have something that Derek should and will most likely tap into: Experience and Wisdom. This isn't an indictment of the young man. He is a wonderful player. But honestly, I've seen both live, and Clapton has more maturity and more command of his craft than Derek. Clapton has a huge catalog as an artist. He is capable of performances that frankly I haven't seen out of Derek. Derek occassionally sounds and looks like he is still practicing. AND that is cool. The emphasis is different. Derek is in a "jam band" mode, and Clapton is a craftsman of song and performance (with some formidable guitar chops that some folks still don't seem to get). Regardless, I believe this may very well turn out to be a wonderful exprience for both of them. Being the chameleon that he is Clapton will pick up some tricks from Derek, and Derek will become a stronger performer. Now if they were lucky, George Benson would be there... Quote
md655321 Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 I suppose I can agree with most if not all of that. EC is a tremendous player live, much better than I would have thought. While he is not a great blues player, imo, nor is he termendously deep he is an absolutely fantastic pop/rock guitarist. Derek still has a ways to go on some levels. Im excited to see him get there, because when he does, WATCH OUT! Quote

I keep trying to pick up the slide, and then I hear Sonny Landreth and Derek and well I throw the damn thing back down. Btw, ABB doesn't seem to have a Michigan date scheduled. That kind of blows... I dug the show outside of Detroit last year. Quote
HolyStitt Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 EC is a tremendous player live, much better than I would have thought. This was my take too. I have heard his recordings my whole life (my mother is a huge fan), but wasn't blown away by his guitar playing until I saw him on the 2004 tour. I bought my mother tickets for the most recent tour, but now I wish I would have bought some for myself because of the fact that he has added Derek Trucks on guitar and he has been playing a few Derek and the Dominoes era tunes, like: Got To Get Better In A Little While, Bell Bottom Blues, Layla, and Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad. In general, he seems to be working a pretty good set, with Let It Rain, Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out, Running On Faith, Everybody Oughta Make A Change, and Motherless Children among the usual suspects. WD45 Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 They are going to be in St. Paul next month, and this clip makes me think I need to go. I think fitting solos into more concise spaces will be good for Derek Trucks. Towards the end of that clip it is interesting to see him solo on different material. I see that there is a live DVD coming out: Amazon link Quote
HolyStitt Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 (edited) They are going to be in St. Paul next month, and this clip makes me think I need to go. That's the show I bought the tickets for my mom. It now looks like the only tickets available are in the upper deck. Edited June 9, 2006 by HolyStitt Quote

BFrank Posted May 29, 2015 Report Posted May 29, 2015 Saw Eric at the Royal Albert Hall last Saturday and he didn't disappoint. I was concerned because I know that many of his shows over the past several years have been known to be lackluster and inconsistent. This show had a minimum of clunkers and more highlights that I could have expected. The strongest piece came totally out of the blue - "I Shot the Sheriff". Never one of my favorites, but he and the band really nailed it. I'm sure that playing at the RAH had something to do with the energy, as well. I've read that it's his favorite venue. Quote
Brad Posted May 31, 2015 Author Report Posted May 31, 2015 He was going to be in NY earlier this year but they wanted over $300 for crappy seats. Pass! Quote
BFrank Posted May 31, 2015 Report Posted May 31, 2015 Wow - I got these on StubHub and they were cheaper than that! Quote
