JohnS Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 (edited) Is anyone able to identify a first edition of this album. Any identifying features would be appreciated. Edited June 20, 2006 by JohnS Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 White glossy paper pasted on a black Folkways-style heavy-stock sleeve, record goes in through the top of the pocket. Red label, deep groove (I believe). I have a flipback with the orange/red cornet label, which is probably from the early '70s, but after the session was licensed to International Polydor. Quote
JohnS Posted June 26, 2006 Author Report Posted June 26, 2006 Thanks CT. Unfortunately I don't have an original. Mine has the red (orange) cornet label but no mention of Polydor. Quote
brownie Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 White glossy paper pasted on a black Folkways-style heavy-stock sleeve, record goes in through the top of the pocket. Red label, deep groove (I believe). VERY heavy-stock sleeve on the original Sonet vinyl I have. The deepgroove is about two centimeters away from the center. Back cover has liner notes in english by Erik Wiedemann. Uncredited cover photo shows only four of the musicians. J.C. Moses is out of the picture. Quote
JohnS Posted July 15, 2006 Author Report Posted July 15, 2006 Thanks Brownie and to Ed Rhodes who emailed me. Sadly I never came across one of these. The music remains great whatever the pressing imo. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Yeah, those original NYCF Sonets are really stinkin' rare... I've only seen one copy, of Volume 2. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Yeah, those original NYCF Sonets are really stinkin' rare... I've only seen one copy, of Volume 2. I have a Volume 2 in a thin, spineless, laminated cover. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 (edited) Yeah, that's the more common variant. Spineless, indeed... Never got too into those International Polydor variants either (diff. jackets), but what can you do? Edited July 16, 2006 by clifford_thornton Quote

JohnS Posted July 17, 2006 Author Report Posted July 17, 2006 I had a Polydor Vol. 2. Alas no cover. I love the photograph on the Sonet Vol 1. Here it is for the record. Quote
JohnS Posted July 17, 2006 Author Report Posted July 17, 2006 Another note, the Storyville cd contains all the music from both lps with the exception of Cisum from Vol 1. Quote
