Clunky Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 Very Saxy is a sublime session, expertly recorded in wonderful sound. Listen to this session on my ipod when out running. Gets me through the 10km barrier every time , that and Right off and the groovy JB tribute from the Nessa AEC box. Quote
mailman Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 (edited) is this record good. are the heads very good with the four saxes, what are they like. how do you rate this lp? This is a fine swinging session. I bought this one on lp over thirty years ago and have given it as a gift several times on CD. Fine heads, great playing by the tenor greats, and Shirley Scott is wonderful here. Actually, Shirley Scott is wonderful anywhere. Edited July 2, 2006 by mailman Quote
Stereojack Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 Great session. Four great tenor players blowin'. What more do you need to know? Pick it up. How does it compare to "Tenor Conclave"? Well, the front line is the same instrumentation, so there are some similarities there, but the orientation of TC is a little more boppish, where VS has much more bluesy, swingy feel, due in part to the inclinations of the four (older) tenor players and the presence of Shirley Scott on organ. The blowing on both is top notch. Quote
Harold_Z Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 YEAH ! I dig it too. It's still in heavy rotation for me. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 I love "Very saxy" too. A fabulous album; greatly treasured. But Teddy Edwards' playing on "Tenor conclave" is wonderful (as are Von Freeman and Buck Hill) and I wouldn't want to be without that album either. MG Quote

The one I have is Teddy Edwards, Von Freeman and Buck Hill, with the Rein de Graaf trio. Timeless CD SJP306. 9 April 1992. Let's see if I can find an image... MG Quote
Free For All Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 (edited) That one does look interesting, but I think the one being referred to is the other. Have to put yours on my list though.................. Edited July 2, 2006 by Free For All Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 That one does look interesting, but I think the one being referred to is the other. Have to put yours on my list though.................. I think it must be deleted. When I did a Google image search, I only got two responses, one of which wsa the Von Freeman discog. If it were available, I think I'd have got a few more pix. Damn fine album. Second hand may be an option (but not mine ) MG Quote
