Stereojack Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amK02PzFDYI...0Soundie%20Jazz Probably made after Gill was off the payroll, but... Gil joined the Claude Thornhill band in 1941, the same year this film was made. Always thought of Ennis as a cornball band because of his association with Hal Kemp, but this band swings pretty good! Non-PC intro to Birth of the Blues! Quote

According to IMDB this would be from 1941. Can't check right now, but I think Evans was already with Claude Thornhill by then. F Quote
JSngry Posted July 27, 2006 Author Report Posted July 27, 2006 Well, yeah, but there's no reason why an arranger's charts wouldn't still be played after he was off the payroll. Or why an arranger wouldn't do something on spec from their old employer. There's a few spots in those charts that suggest Gil, or somebody who was paying attention to him. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 AND the Kemp band could really swing. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 there actually is one Evans arrangement that Ennis recorded, and it's in my book and on my collection, but damned if I can think of the name of it - will report back, but I do remember it's quite brilliant - Quote
