J.A.W. Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 Schwarzkopf her '4 last songs' is as beautiful as anything i have heard in this world. I second that. Her 1963 recording of the second Mahler symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Otto Klemperer is not to be missed either. Quote
Christiern Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 A couple of picture... Heard here in the early 1950s--that voice (along with Kathleen Ferrier's) is still vivid in my memory. Quote

(both did mahler 2 with klemperer. which is preferred?) The magnificent performance with Kathleen Ferrier was recorded live with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam at the Holland Festival, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, on July 12, 1951, twelve years before the equally magnificent studio recording with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and the Philharmonia Orchestra. I have both, and I really can't say which one I prefer. The latter is a far better recording, of course, and is more "listenable", but the former has an emotional tension that can hardly be surpassed. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 one needs them both, then. thanks Quote
