chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 i have heard the other songs from the lp but if i buy it it would be just for this song: is it very unique? whats it like? is it really a classical structure/melody, etc? Quote
michel devos Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 Never heard this one....However, litterally, a Toccata describes a piece of music written for a keyboard instrument (from the latin verb tocare - to touch) and was essentially used for the 18th century music. Who knows? Quote
Spontooneous Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 In the classical field, "toccata" is just a category of showpieces. No set structure to them. This is one of my favorite KD cuts. A great modal, vampy thing -- can't think of anything like it in his discography. KD gets off a great solo in his relaxed later style, and Joe Henderson's solo afterward is simply killin'. Don't miss it. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 Musicologists do sometimes talk about a toccata 'form'. I think - although can't recall - that, specifically, it involves one hand playing the virtuosic passage, and then the other hand doing it, rather than both simultaneously. But that's a fairly rare usage, I'd have said. Quote

You're right - there is no such thing as a specific form for a toccata. Baroque keyboard players sometimes even used it synonimously with the term "prelude", although a toccata can stand on its own, whereas a prelude always serves as an introduction to something - but a toccata could be used like this.
