The new 2-CD set Sue Mingus put out does not seem to include the bonus 45 that was in the LP (or at least the LP Sue and Fred Cohen put out some 20 years ago). What was on this 45? Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Bertrand.

It was a 7" 33, actually. It contained a version of "They Trespass the Land of the Sacred Sioux" recorded at Monterey, 9/18/65.

Well that sucks.

Each CD is only 45 minutes long and the first only has about 35 minutes of actual music.

These two tracks from Monterey (and any others if they were taped - the whole thing was only 35-40 minutes, so there were only one or two more tracks) could have been included as bonus tracks and could have served as a nice historical contrast, since UCLA was a 'correction' of the Monterey gig. In fact, one tracks was on the 7'' 33, so the CD has LESS material than the LP.

Another example of Sue Mingus dropping the ball. A number of people could have helped her put together a more historically significant reissue - why didn't Fred Cohen chime in?

Another stupidity - the Montery box used to be available on iTunes (I bought Joe Henderson's 'Isotope' last year) but it is not anymore

Nice to see when you Google 'UCLA...1965'..Mingus pops up.....LMAO...

Do you think the young Wooden gave Mr. Mingus the time of day??? I wonder if the Wizard attended?

UCLA hoops 64-65...National Champions..Goodrich, Keith Erickson(saw him and Washington play when I was 8, but never heard Mingus)UCLA D1 Champs

Mingus should have played at Texas Western in '66 for the D1 BB Championship banquet....Haskins/Mingus vs Rupp..oh, hell yeah!!!

UCLA Sept '65...the Wizard was getting ready to defend title..Oregon State....Kentucky and Texas Western put an to that....maybe, he was too busy recruiting Alcindor...

UCLA Football in '64/65...a few months before/after Mingus performed...UCLA

UCLA Sept '65...what month were the Watts riots??? All I remember is not being allowed to go outside., and it was hot..and a few neighbors ending up in hospital...

Mingus...1965...UCLA....Watts riots...for him to accomplish what he did is amazing....thanks

I forget - was this mastered off of LP or did they find the original tapes? Great music, but the LP i have is a bit flat-sounding.

Mastered off of test pressings from the LP reissue.

Don't think it's from tests but commercial pressings. A friend of mine was contacted by Sue and he asked for $300 for his set and she went "beserk". If she had "tests" she would not have been looking for others.

I don't know the difference. I was in the Jazz Record Center last fall and asked Fred Cohen about the sound source for the CD reissue. He said (I thought) that it was made from a test pressing for the LP reissue that he had done as a joint venture with Sue Mingus and that she borrowed his copy.
