brownie Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Anybody heard this new release? Is this worth looking for? Understand it was recorded shortly before Rosolino's death. Quote
jazzkrow Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Brownie: Just sent you a PM. His playing of the Multivider (electrified sound) takes some getting used to. The rhythm section, however, is outstanding... Jeff Portland Quote
Eric Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 OT, but I shudder every time I think of how this guy ended it ... really sad. Quote
Free For All Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 I haven't heard it yet, but Varitone or not it's Rosolino and I will be getting it! Quote
montg Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 OT, but I shudder every time I think of how this guy ended it ... really sad. It's not possible for me to compartmentalize the ending and just enjoy the music. So I don't listen to it, my loss I suppose. Quote
Stereojack Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 I haven't heard it yet, but Varitone or not it's Rosolino and I will be getting it! Actually he's playing a Conn Multivider, a device similar to a Varitone, I guess. I have the album, and I shuddered when I read that he was playing the gizmo, but the electronics do not dominate. Frank's playing is as fluid and as inventive as ever, and the notes he's actually playing are way out in front of the tones produced by the Multivider - much of the time one doesn't even notice the added tones. Caveat - apparently the actual tape was rather short, so we are given full length and edited versions of two of the tunes in order to stretch the program. Still, it's new music from one of the greatest trombonists, so I welcome it, warts and all. Quote
brownie Posted November 4, 2006 Author Report Posted November 4, 2006 OK, OK! I'm going to get this one! Thanks to all (and jazzkrow in particular) for the recommendations Quote
