mikelz777 Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 As of the time of this writing (3:34 CST) there is a Paul Desmond/Jim Hall Mosaic which currently has bidded up to $242.50 which translates to $60.63 per disc. Isn't everything included on this set readily available on single discs that could be had in total for a fraction of this cost? Quote
J Larsen Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Didn't RCA put out their own version of this in a small, white box? If I recall correctly, it has everything that in the Mosaic but one track. Quote
Jim R Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 The Mosaic set includes an album that was on Warner Brothers, "First Place Again". I believe the RCA set includes a non-quartet album not included in the Mosaic set. Mosaics sell for big $ also because of the status/collectability factor (like it or not). Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 (edited) The Mosaic set has these quartet albums: First Place Again - Warner Bros. Take Ten - RCA Bossa Antigua - RCA Glad to Be Unhappy - RCA Easy Living - RCA plus a track that appeared on the Playboy anthology Playboy Jazz Allstars, Vol.3. The Mosaic erroneously omitted an RCA track. The RCA set has these albums: Desmond Blue (with strings) Take Ten Bossa Antigua Glad to Be Unhappy Easy Living Both sets are OOP. mikelz777 Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 (edited) Thanks for that info J.A.W. There is such a market for OOP Mosaics, I think that Mosaic should make all of the discographies of their OOP material available. I know the mystique, collectibility and status factor involved in getting the Mosaic but if you were interested in just having the music, I was able to find new copies of all the material in the Desmond/Hall set delivered for about $56.00 (less the 1 track on the Playboy release) and that wasn't even bargain shopping. I think those titles will have to go on my wish list for when I take myself off of my self-imposed buying ban. Edited February 12, 2007 by mikelz777 Quote
mikelz777 Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 With 5 1/2 hours left, the set is up to $71.25 per disc. Quote

mikelz777 Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 (edited) The winning bidder ended up paying $300.00 for this set (before shipping) which translates to $75.00 per disc. I hope they really, REALLY enjoy it. I'm not that beholden to Mosaic sets OOP or not. If I can buy the entire contents (less 1 song) for significantly less than what that bidder paid for one disc, I don't have any problem deciding which way to go. I think we had begun to suspect that. Not a new idea btw, Mike. There have been several Mosaics where the music has/had been issued in near-completeness on other issues. Quote
mikelz777 Posted February 12, 2007 Author Report Posted February 12, 2007 (edited) I guess my excitement/disbelief is showing! It's a set I wish I had, knew that I'd never be willing to pay what it would go for in the market and then discovered I could actually have it in another form very reasonably. I think the Ike Quebec 45 Sessions is one of the OOP Mosaics that is also readily available elsewhere. I got that one for the cost of shipping ($5.58) via BMG. I have both and find that the album on the RCA that's not on the Mosaic is not to my taste. I find the strings quite unlistenable. Quote

robviti Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 fyi, both collectables and gambit have recently reissued first place again. i'm sure the usual caveats apply. Quote
Pete B Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Mosaic recently upped their price for booklets. They now charge $20. Quote
