AllenLowe
I don't like Lucinda W - a little narcississtic for my taste - (sorry, I have no idea how to spell that word) - I wish alt country was truly alt, and not just the same old country stuff dressed up in shiny digital clothing - I'm thinking, like, Kelly Harrell meets Johnny Cash meets Frank Hutchison meets Bo Diddley meets Air meets Eric Dolphy meets Howling Wolf meets me - Edited December 15, 2007 by AllenLowe
Alexander
I don't like Lucinda W - a little narcississtic for my taste - (sorry, I have no idea how to spell that word) - I wish alt country was truly alt, and not just the same old country stuff dressed up in shiny digital clothing - I'm thinking, like, Kelly Harrell meets Johnny Cash meets Frank Hutchison meets Bo Diddley meets Air meets Eric Dolphy meets Howling Wolf meets me - ?uestlove of the Roots once quipped that "alternative hip hop" is a euphemisim for "black people won't touch your albums." "Alt country" seems to be a euphemisim for "country music that won't get played on country music radio."
Van Basten II
I don't think the artists had anything to do with the label alt country, it's writers who coined the term to differenciate them from the mainstream country acts. AllenLowe
that's probably true - my complaint is that they have not re-evaluated basic musical techniques and approaches - it's the same for a lot of Indie rockers who don't grasp that to re-define a form - rock, country, jazz etc - you have to grapple with the elements of that form - songs, music, lyrics, scales, song form, et all - and re-do them somehow. This has been done, but rarely, to my taste, in an interesting way.
Van Basten II
In some case, maybe the more appropriate term would be Country revivalists, because they seem to try to carry the old tradition instead of creating a new form of music.
