Teasing the Korean Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I have a nice Joao Gilberto LP on WB called "Amoroso," with arrangements by Claus Ogerman. Does anyone know if they recorded anthing else together? Ogerman was ubiquitous on the bossa scene for a while there, but I know that Gilberto also recorded sporadically at certain points in his career. Just curious... Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I missed that album! Thanks for pointing it out! I'm a big Ogermann fan. He gets so next to Jobim and the other Brasilian guys. Big eyes for those arrangements! There's a Warner Bros CD, Terra Brasilis, of a later double LP set that reprises a lot of Jobim standards. It was only about $10, and runs nearly 80 gorgeous minutes. Talk about value for money! His album with Bill Evans is great, too. I don't know if that one came out as a single CD, but it's in the rusty box. And the LP should be obtainable on eBay. Quote
chris olivarez Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I have the Gilerto/Ogerman floating around somewhere I'll have to dig it up. I have the Jobim/Ogerman "Terra Brasilis","Urubu" and I just picked up "Wave" but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.Evans and Ogerman recorded several times that I know of over the years once with strings and once with horns. I'm going to Fort Collins this week and I'll be hitting the used record stores hoping against hope that the rusty Evans box will be in one of them. Quote
etherbored Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Evans and Ogerman recorded several times that I know of over the years once with strings and once with horns. "symbiosis" and "bill evans with symphony orchestra"? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted March 7, 2007 Author Report Posted March 7, 2007 Amoroso is out on CD with another JG album from around the same period (no Ogerman). I was reading some Amazon reviews and lots of people don't like Ogerman's string arrangements. Oh well, I must be a square! CO's presence on bossa albums is always a plus for me. Quote
etherbored Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 and for me as well. ogerman is greatness. the day i start caring about the opinions of the masses is the day, well, you get the picture. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted March 7, 2007 Author Report Posted March 7, 2007 (edited) ...the day i start caring about the opinions of the masses is the day, well, you get the picture... How could I have forgotten that axiom? Thanks for reminding me! Edited March 7, 2007 by Teasing the Korean Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 What's not to like about Klaus Ogermann? Who doesn't like him? I'll soon fix that! Quote
chris olivarez Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Count this CO as another fan of that CO. He started off as a "hack arranger". He handled the arrangements for Leslie Gore's "It's My Party" among others. He can be faulted up to a point for that sort of thing but you gotta do what you gotta do to survive. Since that period he arranged one work of art after another. Unfortunately Ogerman says he's done arranging for other people and he's going to concentrate on his own compositions. Tommy Li Puma had to call in favors to get Ogerman to arrange one of the Diana Krall cd's. Maybe one of these days he'll reconsider but for now Ogerman is done. Quote
etherbored Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 yeah, that was krall's 'live in paris' set, which was pretty disappointing to me. though not for the arrangements, mind you. Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 It's a drag when some stupid critic pans a guy for earning a living, isn't it? So he did a commercial date or three? He's still awesome on "The Composer Of Desafinado Plays", to pick one at random. A guy's gotta eat. I tuned the last Pope's cousin's TV for him (really!). Does that make me unhip? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Sorry to say this stuff is "worthless" to me. AND I did hear all this stuff. There are "bad" plumbers too. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 No problems here. It am smoove and relatively in tune. Quote
JSngry Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 And full of singing that brings home what a waste most of the last quarter century of Sinatra's recordings were. Quote
Big Al Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Usually, I love anything with Ogerman on it.... not so with Amoroso. Can't put my finger on it, but I know I get extremely sleepy listening to this CD. Now, the Sinatra/Jobim album with Ogerman on it.... now THAT'S a beautiful album. Heck, anything with Jobim/Ogerman on it is gonna get my money. ESPECIALLY Terra Brasilis. Where the heck is Jim R???? Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 Evans and Ogerman recorded several times that I know of over the years once with strings and once with horns. "symbiosis" and "bill evans with symphony orchestra"? one of my most favorite recordings. i didnt know ogerman had that kind of sensitivity. Quote
