jostber Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 I think I will like this set: "Mosaic Select Mosaic Select: Columbia and Victor Piano Boogie Woogie and Blues (3 CDs) 75 tracks from the Columbia and Victor catalogs of classic boogie woogie and blues piano from the rich period of 1935 to 1941. The sessions include piano solos, duets and trios to small group recordings and feature a range of diverse artists including Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, Freddie Slack, Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, Kenny Kersey and Mary Lou Williams. The blues piano sides mostly feature the unique stylings of pianist and vocalist Jimmy Yancey with over a dozen Victor tracks. The rest of the set dovetails nicely with a slew of sides by vocalist Joe Turner who is accompanied by Pete Johnson, two all star bands led by Benny Carter and Joe Sullivan. Rounding out the set are rare sessions by one of Chicago’s great bluesmen, Cripple Clarence Lofton" http://www.mosaicrecords.com/futureprojects.asp Will be great to hear Jimmy Yancey in his prime in fine audio sound. blind-blake Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 Can anyone comment on this one? Quote
jazzbo Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 Well, it's a WHOLE LOT OF BOOGIE WOOGIE! Excellent sound, some excellent sessions and playing. I can take about one half to one disc at a time. If you think you'd like it because you know what that type of music is like, you'll like it. Quote

Incidentally, nice bike! Just sold mine (Suzuki 650) after getting sick of fixing the damn thing constantly. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) Well, I think it's great. But i want to qualify that: I'm a piano fanatic, I love the music of this time frame, I have listened to the set about eight time through since I've bought it (when it was first released). But. . . it is a lot of boogie woogie music, I'd wager this is not a set anyone except maybe the boogie woogie pianists among us would listen to straight through time after time. It's great in small doses. And great overall; many of these sessions simply aren't going to be on cd again would be my guess. Many haven't been on cd before. A real historically important set. I do think that anyone who really enjoys boogie woogie would enjoy this set. Just as anyone who really loves Sidney Bechet would really enjoy the Bechet Select. Someone who likes "some boogie woogie" or "some Bechet" won't really be the target audience for either set and won't feel they're "great." I'm not sure how familiar you are with boogie woogie piano; if not very, I'd buy a separate compilation or single cd of a boogie woogie artist first. . . And thanks, I've really enjoyed my Fat Bob, think it's probably the best DynaGlide model for me, and it's been a tremendously exciting bike to own and ride, and also completely utterly trouble-free. kh1958 Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 I definitely recommend the set. Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, and Albert Ammons (appearing in varied combinations), are all wonderful. Jimmy Yancy didn't appeal as much as these three, but he's not bad. There's also a smattering of other fine pianists--Joe Sullivan, Teddy Wilson, Freddie Slack, Mary Lou Williams. A Benny Carter session, a Red Allen session. It's an interesting set. Quote

Guest Bixieland Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 personally Yancey is my favorite, and the deepest of all those guys - I'm not familiar enough with all these guys to make that call, but I've got the Yancey disc on right now, and...yeah, I hear ya! JSP is notorious for "borrowing" masterings from labels like Mosaic and Bear Family (Germany). Bear Family won a lawsuit against JSP a few years ago. I don't know if the above box contains any Mosaic masterings, though. I have JSP's Bunny Berrigan 5 disc set. Pretty sure that's a Mosaic ripoff. Whenever they don't mention who the remaster-er is, my eyebrow goes up. I know their recent Fats Waller releases are legit. They openly advertise Ted Kendall--so you know it's legit. However these boogie woogie discs,...no mention. Hmmm. Quote
