JPC sells this box with three SACDs and a bonus DVD with interviews for € 29,95 - other sites ask for three times as much.

The sound of this 30 year old recording is indeed spectacular, putting you right into the club, and it features some top figures of the Swedish jazz scene, Arne Domnérus on alto and clarinet and Lars Erstrand on vibes in particular. Bengt Hallberg is on piano.

The playing is not too progressive, with some Goodman/Hampton references, but recommended nonetheless for all those with audiophile tendencies.

These recordings recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and the analogue masters have been transferred using improved technology to the finest available digital audio format – SACD. For the first time the complete recordings are collected in a three disc release with full documentation and photos. Some of the tracks have only been available in limited editions which makes it all the more exciting for us to present the music to jazz lovers over the world. The recordings were made in Stockholm on 6 & 7 December 1976 by recording engineer Gert Palmcrantz. The producer and record company owner Jacob Boëthius kept a watching eye on the proceedings. One microphone pair spaced 20 cm apart was responsible for the main pick-up, with a couple of microphones placed to register the “live” atmosphere of the Pawnshop jazz club and a few discrete support mikes – all recorded on to a pair of two-track Nagra tape recorders by Gert Palmcratz in the restaurant kitchen! All who have listened to the recordings can vouch for its realism and uncanny “you are there”-feeling – you simply enter a new, musical world… But the superb technology of the recording is only part of it – the musicianship and skill of Sweden’s finest jazz musicians is just as important. These experienced gentlemen were at the height of their powers these winter evenings more than 30 years ago. The group was lead by alto saxophone player Arne Domnérus, who was once described by Charlie Parker as “a very good player, almost as good as me”. Pianist Bengt Hallberg had impressed Stan Getz when moving through the strangest of keys without any effort, and the rhythm section of bass player Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johansen was the finest in Sweden at the time. It swings and cooks, all trough well-known and loved songs such as In a Mellow Tone, Mood Indigo, High Life, Take Five and a string of other standards and jazz favourites. The set also includes a new DVD where vibraphone player Lars Erstrand, a guest soloist on the second night, and the bass player Georg Riedel recalls these fantastic concerts. If you’re looking for a definitive issue of these recordings – here it is. Treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience!

Arne Domnérus, alto saxophone & clarinet; Bengt Hallberg, piano; Lars Erstrand, vibes; Georg Riedel, bass; Egil Johansen, drums.
