Big Al Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Yesh, definitely get the box. I'll also second the nomination of the collection of albums that feature Coltrane in the Red Garland Quintet (mentioned elsewhere in this thread, which is pretty much all of them anyway; so like I said, get the box!) And as a sidebar, don't Red just tear it UP for the first few minutes of "Sweet Sapphire Blues?" Block-chord heaven, my friends! Quote
BruceH Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 I have Soultrane, Lush Life, and this one: Quality stuff. Yeah, that one is good; I also have one called "The Cats" with Tommy Flanagan and Kenny Burrell which is well worth checking out. Not world-shaking, but good stuff. Quote
wesbed Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 (edited) I would add Traneing In, Settin' the Pace, Black Pearls and Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane. Regarding the Traneing In album... I have the K2. What is the song that Red Garland hints at on track 3, Bass Blues? Garland hints at a familiar melody on Bass Blues starting right at 3:57. I'd almost say it's a country song but I'm not certain. Hank Williams? Edited November 26, 2004 by wesbed Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 There are some nice moments on the earlier sessions, but Trane did not play anywhere near as well in 1956 and early 1957 as he began to do in the fall of 57, when he had shaken off the smack and also spent a very fruitful summer with Thelonious Monk. I more or less agree with Shrdlu on the '56 vs. '57 distinction, with the caveat that Trane got much better during 1956 (compare his playing on the May and October sessions with Miles's quintet). Still, his playing on Tad Dameron's Mating Call is great, and it's a lot of fun to hear him matching wits with Sonny on "Tenor Madness". Guy Quote
pryan Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 I've been listening a lot to LUSH LIFE after a musician friend of mine commented that "this one should be in everyone's collection". It really is incredible. I like the varied contexts too; Late is right about that trio blues track, very cool. B-) I'm going to try and find at least a couple of these sessions today, hopefully SOULTRANE and one other. Quote
