Tom 1960 Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 I just borrowed his self titled album(Blue Note) earlier today. This is my first exposure to his playing. Real nice stuff. Any other fans who wish to offer up some thoughts? Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 (edited) Previous JR thread The Best Tenor You Never Heard: JR Monterose (Night Lights show) THE MESSAGE and IN ACTION are two strong dates IMO. I'm not as familiar with his post-1964 recordings, but he has a number of fans around these parts... and at least one or two who knew him rather well. If you run a title search on "Monterose," quite a few threads pop up. Edited August 28, 2007 by ghost of miles Quote

Any other fans who wish to offer up some thoughts? That's an excellent album! I've sometimes wondered why it's his only Blue Note. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 29, 2007 Report Posted August 29, 2007 He got busted and his cabaret card was yanked shortly after this, and he moved back upstate to get his shit together. I like the one on Heavy Soul, Alive in Amsterdam - Paradiso, from '69 with Bennink, Groentjie, Jan Jacobs and Steve Boston. Burning!!! Quote
