Unk Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 (edited) ENJ-8078 2 Rabih Abou-Khalil oud Howard Levy harm Kenny Wheeler tp, flh Charlie Mariano as Michel Godard tuba Steve Swallow b Mark Nauseef dr Milton Cardona & Nabil Khaiat perc Anyone heard this? I've seen it about, but it's rather pricey for a what-the-heck impulse purchase. And no, I'm not looking to this disc for a whole-lot of "jazz" value, rather musical value of whatever type. (My computer's locked-down by my employer, so I can't hear music samples at, for instance, Amazon.) Edited September 20, 2007 by Unk Quote
Aggie87 Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I have a bunch of Abou-Khalil titles, and like them all. I don't think you can go wrong. Not sure how much I'd pay for it though - there's a used copy on amazon.com for $11. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I have about 10 of his CDs. They are all very interesting and enjoyable. "The Sultan's Picnic" is a really good album. "Blue Camel" may be my favorite of all. Quote

"Blue Camel" may be my favorite of all. I have about 7 of his CD's (not quite 10), but I would have nearly said the exact same thing. I think Sultan's Picnic and Blue Camel are the two best, among many quite strong offerings. IMHO, he's one of the best 'synthesizers' of jazz and a particular 'word music' tradition -- of any I've yet heard. Sangry?? Chuck?? You guys dig any of this guy? Anybody else?? mikeweil Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 If you prefer his CDs with jazz players, this one is a good choice. Only weak point IMO is the conga player, Milton Cardona, who works fine in Cuban styles but has rather limited experience with the time signatures Abou-Khalil uses. It might not be that audible for anybody else. I prefer his more Arabian albums, like Roots & Sprouts - there are more of these available on the Arabian market - I hope to get some from a Morrocan dealer these days. Quote
