Head Man Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 According to the latest e-mail circular from Downtown Music Gallery, Henry Threadgill is making a number of his recordings available as 'self-released CD-Rs' and selling them through their store. According to DMG the CD-Rs have been professionally made using pristine vinyl - obviously there must have been a problem with him getting hold of the original masters. I know that some people feel that $16 is a bit steep for CD-Rs but, hey, this music is so good that it would be foolish not to bite. Since it is very unlikely that this music will ever see the light of day through any other route, this is probably the only way that you will ever get to hear it. Further details here: DMG Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 (edited) This is interesting. If its not from the master tapes, can an artist legally sell burns of his own music from OOP lps made by a record company? Edited November 7, 2007 by Stefan Wood Quote
AndrewHill Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 They're asking $30 for 'Carry the Day'? Wow, is it that rare? I got my copy for $3.99 and I've never see it for more than $7.99. Quote

And there's a number of labels that those CDR's are coming from: RCA/Novus, India Navigation, Taylor Made, etc. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 I'd bet this is $olely some DMG thing all around. Quote
robviti Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 dmg was selling some of these cdrs at this year's visionfest. i might buy them if threadgill was selling them directly. instead, i'll probably pay a little more and get the reissues on the why not label. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 Air Song and Air Raid have been reissued a few times in Japan. Quote
Head Man Posted November 9, 2007 Author Report Posted November 9, 2007 Air Song and Air Raid have been reissued a few times in Japan. Yes, but neither of the two are generally available and none of the others are available at all as far as I know. I suppose the point I'm making is that if you want to hear this marvellous music then getting it from DMG seems to be the only realistic option at the moment. Quote
